Sound system

Featured Replies

I want to uprate all of my speakers, both front and rear, and the tweeters too?

I'm running a sub and amp and a decent head unit. No budget as such, just want really good speakers tbh

Can you recommend some?

Also is it worth uprating the cabling to the said speakers?

And how much difference does it make running the speakers off the head unit or a dedicated amp? atm i have 2 amps, 1 for front speakers + 1 for the sub. can i get a better sub to do it all? and if so is it worth it or will it sound good enough just running off the head unit?

afaik the rear speakers are standard, the fronts cost me £70 a few months back but want to go better really

is it worth running rear speakers or just disconnect them? after advice plzzzzzz

it depends on the speakers and headunit and amp, and install.

you need shallow mount for the fabia mark 1, focal, hertz and loads of others do decent slim mounts, also depends on music taste.

I'd put the front into the rears (if you can be bothered/want to) and get better front speakers.

i'd fade out the rear speakers as it spoils the sound/ imaging. a well installed system you shouldn't be able to locate where each speaker is positioned. I'd also look at getting a hu with time alignment if it doesn't already have it.

I've got a brand new set of official oem blaupunkt rear upgrade speakers lying around Luke.

They are plug and play, and (from searching on here) claimed to be a significant improvement over the standard ones.

The best results are running speakers off a separate amp, you'll peak any headunit you use (even top of the range) and it just distorts the signal.

It's better again for your sub and speaker amps to be separate. Run a mono for your sub, and 2 channel for your front speakers.

Don't bother about rear speaker, rip them out and save the weight. It's better to invest in decent front components. With a decent set up front, you won't noticed the abscene.

Aim for 100-120 RMS front components. Running off a 150 RMS 2-channel amp.

And yes update the wiring. I'd use the money you would spend on your rear Speakers on sound proofing also, pad the front doors out whilst it's all out.

Pretty much what he said!

Good advice..

What he said. Though I have JL VR650CSIs in my doors on Golf Mk4 spacers. They "just" fit. They sit on the window bar at the back and are very close to the grille in the front. So around 60-62mm depth is the limit without redoing the speaker grilles/door cards.

In an ideal world, I'd have something like this.

...but they're around 3" deep!!! So anything short of a Humvee's gonna have issues mounting behind OEM door cards.

Could you link me to what components and wire to buy please? Basically everything I need? I'm really new to all this ICE stuff. :)

I'd take them off your hands ;)

Is correct.

And very important to sound-deaden the front doors while you are at it.

This will maximise the sound quality of your new front speakers.

I can recommend a product called Skinz but there are others which are just as good.

Don't under-estimate the value of sound-deadening - it makes a huge difference to the sound quality which you will achieve.

As far as amplifiers go, you should get a 4 channel and use 2 channels for your front speakers and 2 channels bridged to mono for your sub.

It's not necessary for sound quality, but you could always use the head unit to power your existing rear speakers to give rear fill for the rear passengers if you ever carry them. It won't cost you anything to do this, but it won't help the sound quality either because it will drag the sound stage towards the rear of the car. Your choice.

Difference between powering the speakers of a head unit or amp is like night and day. HU has around 40watts max output. Amps can range from 50wrms to how bigs your wallet/batteries are.

You want to spend your money on the best front components you can plus an amp to power them. Also make sure you mount them well. I used 2x18mm mdf baffles for my 6inch mids in the front doors. Plus plenty of sound deadening around them. Like already mention look for an amp that will send about 100wrms or more to each side.

Once that's done see how it sounds then look at your sub. It might just be a case of making a sub box designed to your sub better. Look at sending 1.5 to 2x more power to your sub than what you do to your fronts.

I'm not one for spending money on big name cables. I use any 4awg power cable to the amps and any RCA leads also. Left the door cables alone and just have speaker cables going from the amps to behind the HU to tap into the oem cables.

I'd definitely upgrade the speaker cable from the OEM stuff if installing an amp. It's far easier to pass wire through to door than mess about connecting to back of stereo etc.

Regards power cables, lots of talk of using welding cable over on ICE forums, as power cable.

Even a 50w RMS amp will be better than the 50w RMS onboard a headunit.

Even a 50w RMS amp will be better than the 50w RMS onboard a headunit.

Headunit is more like 7w RMS. 50w peak.

I'd take them off your hands ;)

cheers for the offer, but you're a bit of a trek away from me. And without wanting sounding too much like xa0sx, I CBA to post them due to being mega busy at work for the forthcoming weeks...

If I've still get them when I next do my drive up to see the outlaws in east yorkshire, i'll drop you a pm

No worries :)
