Is My Coolant Temp Sensor Broken?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Having been parked on the drive overnight, I started the car up this morning at 6am and drove to work.

I noticed after driving only 2 miles the temp gauge indicated 90 (12 o clock position), which struck me as odd as it was quite nippy this morning and

it usually takes much longer to warm up to that degree.

I've read a few posts on here, including the technical guides section, which detail the coolant temp sensor as the problem on other models of fabia.

Is this the case here with my vRS?

If so, is it the one near the air box towards the rear of the engine bay?

Or do I need to change the coolant bottle which has a sensor built in?

Could it be anything else??

It wasn't too long ago I had to have the heater matrix replaced due to coolant leakage, which was an emotional episode due to the

incompetencies of the garage doing the job, I just want to make sure nothing else goes wrong before the colder weather sets in.

Please give any help or advice you can, if possible I'd like to do the job myself.

Thanks in advance.

coolant expansion tank isn't temp - it's a level sensor.

On the MPI it's a common fault - not sure if it's the same thermostat housing but i'd suspect probably not. However if it's also made of plastic... Then chances are it suffers the same issues and may be worth looking at.

A VRS owner would need to chip in here however to confirm...

Vag-com maybe?

I had a faulty coolant temp sensor and I seem to recall it being by the air box.

Very easy to replace and stopped my temp needle going from warm to nothing in seconds. Got any other electrical gremlins as the systems can be very sensitive for poor battery voltage and then go a bit haywire.

HTH.

flipster- I don't appear to have any 'electrical gremlins', I just noticed the somewhat rapid rise of the gauge from zero to 90 today.

The prospect of further coolant related problems doesn't give me a warm, fuzzy feeling!

However, if its only a small cheapish part & relatively easy to do I'll be happy enough.

Any pointers and part numbers will be very much appreciated.

my needle seems to get to 90 quite quickly too so I'd assume that was normal.

However but the only problem I have is when I park on a hill (facing downhill) overnight when I start the car in the morning the coolant warning light comes on the dash, when I turn the car round facing uphill and restart the car the light does not reappear. I have been told this is the sensor in the coolant bottle and not to worry about it as long as my coolant level is normal and I'm not obviously leaking coolant.

A tip I read is (before the car has been driven) to open the coolant bottle and put a long flat headed screw driver down into the bottle and gently scrape the sensor to clean it. Apparently this can improve things.

I still haven't bothered doing this myself but probably will get around to it at some point

Well it sounds like the temp sensor might be faulty then.

We're talking about 5 minutes tops for the gauge to go from zero to ninety after being parked outside all night, which doesn't seem right to me.

Petardo, I think my issue is different to what you describe (ie no problem with level sensor).

Anyone know of part numbers please?

Anyone else shine any more light on it?

Cheers.

5 min up to temp sounds about right to me. mine rarely takes any longer than that and thats being gentle until its warmed up. if you drive hard from cold it can be hot in no time at all.

i find the engine will take forever to warm up at tick over but when driving will only take a mile or 2 to warm up.

I wouldnt expect a failed sensor to still give readings and hold at the correct point but could be wrong....

easy check would be to turn on the heater when it says its at 90 and if the heater blows cold then you know its broken but it sounds normal to me
