Instrument cluster removal

Featured Replies

Has anyone done this? I've done a search...

I removed the lower dash and trim parts, then the two torx screws at the front/lower edge of the instruments, and when I feel behind the unit at the top there's two plastic mouldings that seem to hold the top of the unit in place. Can't find any way to release these.

Can anyone advise? Unfortunately I managed to get some glass cleaner *behind* the front panel, so I can now see streaks!

Many thanks from a *Newbie*.

Simple but be warned you may activate the immobilizer, when you remove the cluster. Get a thin 6" ruler and slide in at the top of the cluster, and between the dash, this will enable you to disengage the retaining lugs behind the cluster.

A mate did this to his, but when he put it back, it would not start........he called the RAC, they recovered to dealer and was stung for £80 to reset the immobilizer.

I have VCDS, so could possibly have reset it for him, but he did not tell me until after the event....... :wonder:

Many thanks - I read your thread I was about to reply! I found that the top lugs can be released by gently pushing down on the top of the rear of the cluster and pushing forwards at the same time - the unit popped out easily after this.

I cleaned the muck off the inside of the front glass, reassembled the unit and installed. I had no problems with the immobiliser, but I had to reset the clock and the tyre pressure monitoring. The warning lights for the power steering and traction control also stayed on until the car had been driven about 30 metres, but now everything's normal.

I have VCDS Lite (I have a very old VAG-COM licence), but plan to upgrade to VCDS HEX+USB-CAN (as we also have a pre-CAN car at home).

Just trying to work out if the upgrade plus shipping costs from the USA plus VAT on arrival is cheaper than buying from a UK supplier. However, I'm wary about buying in the UK, as my original VAG-COM came from a UK supplier and I had a hard time convincing Ross Tech that my licence was genuine when it came to moving the licence to a new PC.

ISTR the licence for VCDS is now actually in the cable rather than the software - ie the cable acts as a dongle, so you shouldn't have these problems with VCDS and can install the software as many times as you like as long as you use a genuine cable.

It maybe worth you ringing Derek, at
