Cheap Arctic Snow Chains

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Anyone have any experience of these snow chains.

Pretty cheap at £30 inc delivery.

Thought I might get some for the front wheels in case of emergency.

Cheaper that socks and I imagine more robust (but I have never used chains so just guessing here).

Anyone used them?

Cheap.

Very thin chains.

Cheap elastic tensioners.

Not easy to fit.

Buy cheap, buy twice!!

I've about 6 sets of chains in my garage. I drive to the Alps a couple of times each winter (for the past 25 years or so). Every time I change my car it seems I have a different size set of wheels and tyres and none of the old chains fit (though most are actually unused) even though each set should fit a range of tyre sizes. Guess what - none of the sets fit Betty! Nonetheless I endorse what Graham says ... buy decent quality; £50 upwards should do the job - but look on e-bay etc for deals.

Hi fuzzybunny.

I have invested in a set of these......................... http://www.snowchains.co.uk/main/suv.htm#

They are more expensive, but are the best quality.

Not used then yet though, decided to buy after the snow/ice came last year. emoticon-0136-giggle.gif (They work in mud too emoticon-0105-wink.gif)

Depends how often you think you will use them.

I bought a cheap £20 set off ebay for the pug when we were going to Germany over Xmas.

We used them several times and got us up some steep snowy hills in the mountains.

First fitment was a ball ache but after we mastered the technique it only took a couple of mins to fit/remove them.

They seem decent quality.

Like above... they don't fit the Seat though... :wonder:

.......but they are a bitch to put on if your wheels are up to the axles in the goo already

Thanks Guys that's really helpful.

I'm reluctant to pay a lot for chains as (like most people) I will probably never use them.

Also whatever I buy as sure as eggs is eggs they wont fit the next vehicle.

Got around OK with just the 4x4 and standard Tyres in last winters snow and I have no plans to venture abroad.

It was just for emergencies and for the psychological comfort of knowing they are in the boot.

Problem is of course when I did get stuck in my 2WD VW in 2009 even if I had chains I couldn't move as the roads were all blocked with skidding micras and rear wheel drive Bimmers.

I have considered these Chains, they are on Costco for about £50, question is how many times would one have to get out to put them on and take them off when the snow is patchy?

I suppose they would get you out of a fix if one did get stuck though.

for most people in this country tyres make more sense than chains. If you're not heading for the alps then I'd say go read some of the inter tyres threads and stop worrying about chains. Proper cold weather tyres also have the advantage that you can stop so much more quickly and that's before you consider the cornering

I do agree that winter tyres are best but there is a significant cost investment and the issue of somewhere to store them.

The vast majority of UK cars run throughout the winter on summer tyres and rely on gritted roads to keep them safe.

I'm assuming that summer tyres dont suddenly stop working below 7 deg C they just get progressively less efficient.

Chains or socks would just be a back up in case I really got stuck.

Cheers

Thats what I think too fuzzy.

As kitten and I work part-time, we cannot afford the £800 odd for a set of replacement wheels and winter tyres. emoticon-0101-sadsmile.gif

The situation is also compounded by the fact that I was diagnosed with HCM this year and have had am implant, so wrestling with wheels and tyres isn't really viable or safe for me. emoticon-0106-crying.gif

Ivor is only JUST over a year old, so when his standard tyres are due for replacement I'll fin quality winter tries and run them all year round.

I suspect that new tyres will be needed after about 16-18k that'll be in about 18 months time from now.

I'll be getting to 15-16,000 in a year, around December time..... on 12,000 now. emoticon-0136-giggle.gif
