Higher tyre pressures for better economy?

Featured Replies

Caravan manufacturers take a different view but you need to know your axle loadings.

To make it easy lets say the load index on a tyre allows 500kg max and 50psi max.

At 500kg load the tyre should be inflated to 50psi. If the tyre load is 400kg then the tyre pressure would be 40psi.

If you fit tyres with different load rating and different maximum pressure then your running psi changes.

Harder to do on a car though.

It's also recommended to run winter tyres at a slightly higher pressure.

Don't forget, more than + or - 10% of manufacturers pressures and you could be in trouble with the law.
I am sure any insurance company would have fun with tyres not at manufacturer recommended pressures if you were in an accident, probably class it as a performance modification.

I continue to be amazed that drivers are quite happy to run their cars with illegal tire pressures becoming a danger to themselves and other road users.

I am so sorry to bore you, but the police could quite easily call you to book if your tire pressures are over 10% out from manufacturers specification; especially if you are involved in an accident.

Tony

the car manufacturer or the tyre manufacturer?

I don't think anyone has said they are running outside spec? I run mine at full load pressure, which is clearly in spec.

Tony I'm not trying to be argumentative but I can't see how thats inforceable(see the below scenario)

I set my tyre pressures to the 2 passanger (lowest) value as that is the normal load condition when I drive my car.

Say I then happened to pick up my friends the car is now fully loaded and the pressure set for an empty car is outside of the 10% of the fully loaded value from skoda.

Also surely if your driving appropriatly for public roads the marginale performance benifits of exact tyre pressures is going to be rather mute?

I keep saying (but Tony is deaf)

There is a range of tyre pressures given by skoda for each car - in the case of my monte it is stated on the fuel filler and at it lowest is 33psi up to 44psi.

As long as it's in thus range, you will gave no issues from anyone. You actual pressures are variable anyway with conditions so a strict law is unenforceable.

In fact Tony - either provide a link to where I can read HHS detail of your mythical 10% law or shut the hell up.

Have you never seen the Police pull over a suspected unroadworthy or overloaded vehicle, and get out a pressure guage?

*sigh*

Yes - but, and please listen, if you are within the lower/upper limits for actual pressure and not eceedinv max pressure stared on the tyre then there is no issue.

Issues of law aside, Over inflation is less dangerous than underinflation.

edit:

Also my 4x4 came with 16's so now it is on 17's the sticker is not valid anyway.

Do lorry drivers have to constantly deflate the tyres on their tractor/trailers when the deliver their load? I don't think so :D
