Hit & Run

Featured Replies

Hi All

Got a call from the wife the other day to say someone had hit the car and b*ggered off.

Fortunately, 2 upstanding citizens left notes on the window with the details of the car and the time. One note even said it was a woman, she knew she had done it but just drove off.

Unfortunately none of the people left their contact details so we cannot contact them as witnesses.

It looks like it will be a new rear bumper as it is all gouged and rippled and a bit of scuffing on the bottom of the boot lid.

The Police eventually arrived last night (30 hours later) but did seem very concerned and keen to get it sorted out especially as we had details of the culprit. We just hope that the woman will get found out and done for causing the damage, leaving the scene, not reporting the accident and hopefully her insurance will put the boot in as well.

We have 2 notes, giving us the car registration, the driver was a woman, the make model and colour of car and it seems that there is cctv in that car park so hopefully she will get what she deserves.

I may also have to put an advert in the local paper to see if we can trace the 2 people that witessed the accident.

It just goes to show there are still some honest decent people out there who are willing to try and help just because they can.

Cheers

Dave

Hope you get it sorted and she gets whats coming to her!!

I witnessed the identical thing about 6 months ago at a car park in Shrewsbury. An elderly gent reversed straight into the back of a parked car and drove off. I waited until he had gone and also had a photo of him doing it. Posted a note under the windscreen and had a phone call later on. The lady said- 'well it's a car park, why do you expect' so I said I'd expect someone to do the same if it was my car crashed into!

Some people really don't give a s h ! T!!!

Hopefully you'll sort it all out :)

I left a note for someone in a car park when I watched someone scrap along the side of their car. The guy was massively grateful and said he'd chase it up. Gave contact details but never heard back from him. The bint they left it was a really nasty bit of work when I pointed it out to her what she'd done! :(

I really hope you get it sorted, once I witnessed a guy parked in a disable bay, reverse and stove into both doors of a Nissan Bluebird, it was old at the time but immaculate, he drove off and another woman layed on his bonnet to stop him, I got his details full reg colour Astra sxi etc and handed details to customer services in Asda( their car park ) I went to court as a witness he was done for leaving the seen etc job done. No went to court a second time, the details I gave silver ,reg number , star of David alloy wheels, description of him, later he had dyed his greying temples, was questioned into account because I said it had a spoiler, it had an integral lip not a separate spoiler. So I said so in his original trial, you think I got it wrong described him and the car perfectly, but now because you say I am an unreliable witness because he got the Grecian 2000 out and his spoiler is integral, I am not malicious I did not want this guy to loose his livelihood ( he was a lorry driver, 3rd offense ) just to pay for damage to the car ( which they said in the original trial he did not realise he had hit something. In the end he got off in spite of admitting he looked round to see the damage ( he was apparently putting on his seatbelt not looking to see the damage ! :@

the local paper is always a good shout. Our paper put about an old gentlemen having is bike stolen (only way to get around) and thanks to the paper he got it back

Hope you have the same luck, been done a couple of times like this and it has cost me so I feel your pain. Hope between the witnesses and CCTV they catch the *******

Hi All - just an update.

The Police called last weekend - they have basically done nothing and passed it to the Police at another town where the culprit resides.

The other Police will need to go and have a look at the car and the original PC will call me in two weeks time to see if they have contacted me.

I would assume that the driver that hit our car will have had the damage repaired and sold their car by then.

The Police had the crime reported to them and all the details including registration number within a couple of hours of it happening - it should have been an easy nick for them.

Nearly 3 weeks later, they still haven't checked the other car.

Cheers

Dave

I would drop a nicely worded letter to the Chief Constable explaining the story and asking if he thought it acceptable for his officers to neglect investigating what is in effect a simple case of leaving the scene of an accident. If you word it correctly and mention that you are also sending a copy to the Police Ombudsmen and the local paper, I think you'll receive a favourable response!

He would probably agree it is unacceptable but will also be trying to resource bigger issues with a shrinking resource pool.

I feel for OP, I have been in a similar, but much more serve situation before (where my parked car was totally written off) and the culprit never saw justice. But in the scheme of things no one was hurt and there is no residual threat.

just get a friend to act as witness and claim though insurance, dont let them get away with it

My Mrs works in Grangemouth Dave, whereabouts did it happen?

And push all our premiums up?

No wonder they're so expensive.

If the police know who it is, they should nail him to the wall.

Terrible story dude just goes to show how many inconsiderate morons there are out there! I luckily have not been in that situation did you have any luck in tracing the people who left notes as I am assuming without them there are officially no actual witnesses for a nice easy fix for police. Can you not pass all info over to your insurance company with reg etc they should be able to get the ball rolling with other parties insurance company which would at least get some attention from the scum bag!

Yeah that'll work, I'm sure minor vehicle crime is at the top of their control strategy. Then again...perhaps not.

How is it pushing the premium up? the woman hit his car, he has her registration, a witress just say they seen it then everything will be sorted.

So in your world, he should just cry and repair his car out of his own pocket?

My Mrs works in Grangemouth Dave, whereabouts did it happen?

Hi Oobster / All

It happened in Falkirk in one of the big car parks.

I contacted the local paper to see if they would run a story on it or at least put a letter in for me but hey won't do that.

I have to pay for an advert to go in and they are quite expensive so I don't know if its worthwhile as we already have to pay the XS to the insurance company and that is another accident on my wife's list (the last one was a van running into the back of her car just a few months ago).

I don't want the woman to get away with it so I might just put the advert in the paper and see if the 2 people will come forward.

I just can't believe the Police haven't contacted us again yet - they should have been able to catch her red handed with the Skoda paint still stuck to her car.

Will just have to wait and see what happens.

Cheers

Dave

You'd be surprised how a well written letter can get results from a force. There isn't a Police Chief in the country who wouldn't issue an edict to get this moving after receiving a complaint. It's known as an "easy win" and considerably easier than them having to deal with even the PCC and bad publicity.

You have nothing to lose - get on the PC and get writing. be clear and concise and state your grievance. Give as much detail as possible and above all be firm but reasonable. Empathise; "I completely understand and appreciate your force has other higher priority work to deal with however this type of incident is very much the thin end of the wedge and".......

Ah right, was just wondering if it was my Mrs (she's a bit hash-bashy) but if it was Falkirk then it wouldn't be her :D

Hope you manage to get this sorted Dave, sounds like you should be putting a bit or pressure on the rozzers though.

True, but as has been said, it could be an "easy win" for them, and may lead to other things. How many times have you seen them on Traffic/Motorway Cops say they'll pull someone over for no seatbelt or some other minor infraction and actually find out they've got bald tyres, no tax, no insurance, carrying drugs, etc..?

just get a friend to act as witness and claim though insurance, dont let them get away with it

Doing this would make you no better than the hit-n-runner.

A very poor and illegal suggestion.

Er. Were you born yesterday. You may find that the 'minor infraction' is in fact just a valid reason to pull over an otherwise suspect vehicle.

Sensible suggestion..let's all do this. Of course it might transpire that your 'witness' gets found out and instead gets sent to prison for attempting to pervert the course of justice. For instance the notes on your windscreen might actually have the wrong registration number written down and the owner can prove they were elsewhere...

I saw it happen in a service station car park, the guy driving was old and a bit of a what to do when he saw I saw him. I suggested he left his details for the owner while the service station staff suggested he drove off as everyone else does.

Said staff got very rude when I said I thought it was awful they said that.

As it happens the owner came out, saw the damage and said "don't worry it was already damaged and is booked in for a repair, but thanks for leaving your details". Turned out ok in the end, but just driving off is plain wrong.

Can't believe your local paper. We made a story of the chap having his bike stolen

Hi All

The wife took the car in to get repaired the other day and was told that tyhere was no XS to pay as it had been waived.

She called the insurance and it seems that the woman has admitted liability.

We don't know yet if the Police were anything to do with it as they haven't contacted us yet (4 weeks) but I think the insurance company (Tesco) did what they could to get a good result.

I just hope the woman gets done for leaving the scene of an accident etc and also hope her insurance company puts the boot in as well.

Anyway, should get the car back on Tuesday and looks like the first thing that will need done is the winter wheels/tyres will need to be put on.

Thanks for all the replies and support guys.

Cheers

Dave
