Bonnet catch sticking

Featured Replies

Hi all. My bonnet catch appears to be sticking when I close the bonnet. This leaves the black plastic piece sticking out from the grill every time I close it which I have to push back manually. Is this normal? I used to have a golf with the same mechanism so I dont think it is right.

Is there something I can do to sort this or will it require a new part?

Thanks

What age is the vehicle?

Mine is a 2003/03 and the original bonnet release lever was plastic coated steel. This (over time) warped, split the plastic and rusted the steel inside making it jam half way out when opening the bonnet Grrrrr.

I have since replaced it with a new one which (appears) to be a solid plastic jobbie although it looks exactly the same and same part no. etc.

Hi Johhny. Mines an 2004 / 54 reg. Must admit I haven't noticed any rusting/splitting you mentioned. You much did a new one cost? Thanks

IIRC about £10/£12. It is a bit fiddly to fit, and don't accidently close the bonnet without having the new lever in place...........

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind.

Have you actually tried lubricating it?

My preferred lubricant is 3M High Performance PTFE - expensive but worth it.

I also use white spray grease which may be more appropriate in this context - the dealers seem to use it. But if using grease it would be worth cleaning it up first.
