First service

Featured Replies

My beloved Yeti is coming up to its first birthday at the end of October and so far has been totally free of faults, hasn’t even used a drop of oil (it’s a TD140). As a consequence I haven’t given servicing that much thought. I was vaguely under the impression that the Yeti had a variable service mileage that informed the owner according to useage, I seem to remember seeing 18,000 miles once in the Maxidot whilst I was fiddling.

Anyway, my dealer just rang wanting to book it in for its annual service. Now I have no objections to annual services – in fact from an oil change point of view I am more than in favour of them. I explained I thought it was on a variable schedule and he stated if it had the code QG1 noted on the manual it indeed was but if it was anything different it was annual. He seemed to think it was rare for a Yeti to be on an ECU knows best servicing schedule but certainly not impossible.

My daily ride is a smart fortwo so I cannot investigate further till I get home, Just curious as to what has been the experience of those on here who have had there Yeti serviced?

My local dealer rang after a year and mentioned annual service. I explained it was on variable with 8600 miles and/or a year to go.

The dealer simply expressed surprise and said hope to see you at the appropriate time. Most of our town driving is done in our Fabia and six months later with 15000 miles on the clock - still over 3000 to go on Maxidot - I rang up and got Yeti serviced. The choice was made simply because being an old fogey I have not quite got the concept of long life oil. Depends on how the individual feels I suppose.

Thanks geordiebroon, I wasn't imagining a variable service interval then  Being of the old fogey persuasion myself when it comes to oil I may book it in and see if I can get them to fit the winter boots at the same time, nothing ventured nothing gained.

Mine's on variable servicing, and I know a few others here are the same, so your dealer is talking "tommy rot" or is looking for business.

However I would say that if you are going less than probably 10k annually then variable is NOT the way to go.

Snap; + 1

The OP refers to fiddling with Maxidot and seeing 18,000 miles. This is indicative of the regime being set to 'variable' i.e. 18,000/2 yrs as opposed to 10,000 miles/1 yr for fixed.

Have another fiddle and see what the display shows now?

Will have another prod at the Maxidot. It is the first time a stealer has ever contacted me to arrange a service! could've knocked me over with a feather. I will have done about 12,000 miles by birthday time, nearly all motorway mileage or fast A road work. We use the smart for the scuttling around Manchester, and that is all it's fit for, not a patch on the original smart sadly.

Varable service is just fine IMHO, but an annual oil change is not a bad idea.

In my case, the two just about coincide - about 30,000 km/yr. The first year I used about 4 litres of engine oil, most at the very beginning. The second year only 1 litre. I buy Sunoco VW 507 spec oil for about £10/l and made the dealer use my oil during service.

I do 20000 miles/annum and have had mine done every 10000 miles, or every 6 months. Cost has been almost exactly £100 each time, and mainly for the oil constituent. No grumbles here at all, as I would prefer to have a well oiled machine running properly under my right foot, and with no unforeseen surprises lurking in the wings.........

Wish we had a dealer like yours round here George; £150 at least just for an oil change :o

Our Yeti was factory set to QG1 (code on the build sticker in the service book and boot floor), although Allams must have switched her to QG2 as she's 3000 to go with 6500 done.

Not complaining mind as I'm not a fan of the long life regime despite covering 13000 or so mile a year. Currently have her registered on one of those two year two service plans.

My Yeti has just had it's first service on an annual regime at Bickertons in Sheffield. They charged me £110 for the privilege. D.M Keith at Huddersfield wanted £183, The service manager there did not know what size engine was in the 170.

I've just booked my first service at the behest of Maxidot. Car will have done 19,000 at the point of service. Winchester Motor Company have quoted £165 (ish, including VAT) for the work.

Nice one

£226 here in Liverpool.

I've just had my first service, £152.75 in Doncaster. I was going to go with variable but when I checked the oil at the weekend it was so black I decided it needed changing. Also the aircon is not blowing cold enough air. The service mechanic spotted this,so well done. Going in to have it fixed on the 18th October under warranty.

That was about the same for me in Newcastle. I am amazed at people getting £150-£170 for an 18k service. They have dealers worth going back to. The saving grace is that at 18k per service that price is manageable. Previous cars were serviced every 12k so this is a cracking leap forward.

I'm running on Variable and will get to 18,000 mile after about 18 months.

I have though recently had, at 9,250 miles/9 months, an 'interim' oil change, while-u-wait in about 35 -40 mins. My dealer charged me £99 inc VAT, which I thought was pretty fair.

Stewart,

Was that at Hayseldens and did you get the car from there?

Cheers,

Hi Steve,

Yes, it was at Hayseldens. I tried to buy my Yeti from them but I got such a good offer from Autofinders that Hayseldens couldn't get near it. There was no problem getting a service and they said they would fix the aircon under warranty without any prompting from me. They seem, so far, to be a decent dealership. They are providing a courtesy car when I take the Yeti in for the warranty work. they also offer a collect and deliver service or they'll give you a lift to wherever you want to go, locally.

Cheers Stewart,

Thats exactly my line into SM ownership (via Autofinders/AutoeBid) - and I had been thinking of using Hayseldens for my servicing. Good to hear they handle non-purchasers well.

Thanks again,

Steve

'ere, just noticed you've ordered exactly the same car as me, right down to the colour and you live in the Barnsley area like me. Could be confusing if we park in the same place
