suspension upgrade without lowering?

Featured Replies

though I agree that lowering the Fabia improves its looks no end I have to keep the car practical as its my every day drive and as well as the usual motorway and urban driving needs to negotiate farm tracks and building sites.....

is there any way to improve on the current suspension (standard) without reducing the ground clearance (or at least only a minimal loss)

I have fitted a Whiteline rear ARB which has improved things a lot but it could still be better I am sure.

any otions other than dropping it to the floor

get coilovers and just set them to the highest they go, will be near enough standard ride hieght and handle alot better then anything else

Exactly this!

Eibach springs and koni fsd dampers

Only lowered 25mm so you'll still be able to negotiate farm tracks

looks like coilovers are the way to go then....

makes sense as i can adjust to suit if needed.

any suggestions on a reasonably good budget set? seems a lot of variation between £200 ebay jobbies to £1K

as with most I want to spend as little as possible but also dont want junk that will be scrap in 6 months :D

Ap coilovers best of the budget range

Ap coilovers best of the budget range

out of interest I notice that none of the sets distinguish between the hatch and combi.

I would have thought that the extra rear wieght of the combi would have needed a heavier spring...

or am I over thinking things and it wont make any difference in reality

I fitted Koni FSD Dampers with standard OEM Skoda springs (this is what the FSD dampers were designed to go with..not the Eibachs!).......Run this very well on the roads up here.....also fully polybushed the car...which makes a BIG difference! B)

yeah poly bushing and Rear ARB should be enough for the estate, because sorting the springs for the back is a bit of a hassle.

hassle in what way?

just a pain to fit or getting correct parts?

because if u get a cheap set of coilovers u will lose the load carrying capacity of the car.

you can spend alot and get KW v2's

but the lowering spring route will mean custom spring rates to keep the load carrying capacity which means harsh ride from the back and ultimately will make the back twichty.

if i had anything other than a vrs estate i would go for poly bushes and Rarb and that's it

Exactly.

Mine doesn't look like it's been lowered much at all. KW v3 at max height.

hmm at £1200 way outside my budget though :'(

I might stretch to £500 but that would be my limit.

too many options and not enough info. after 130K miles thinking the suspension must be more than a little tired but just cant go to that sort of money.

I do also wonder that none of the options out there are specificly for the combo. my car is both fun and a workhorse and any changes MUST cater for both the fun side and the boot full of building materials

KW V1's are sub £500 and top notch IMO.

As mentioned the KW V1's are an amazing bit of kit for the money.

I wasn't meaning you needed the same version, I was just saying that KW at maximum height look pretty normal. :)

ahh I see. thanks

any idea if the spring rate is different on the combi? I would imagine it will be but cant find for sure.

I wouldnt want to loose any load capacity - been known to over load as it is - though always leave at least an inch of travel :rofl:

If you fitted Eibach springs, they seem to do a kit specific to the estate, 30mm drop front, 20mm drop rear. Which isn't huge. Other than that, replace console bushes, maybe try a front ARB. The VRS one would be an upgrade and is relatively cheap.

Im on Koni FSD's, Jabba RARB and eibach springs, cruising along its perfect and good for smoothing out the bumps. But wen i met up with Gaz_vrs he's on coilovers weitec hicon GT's i think, he could slam it into a corner and it wouldnt roll at all i was very suprised how much he was pushing it and it wasnt even twitching. Prob helps hes on decent tyres too mind compared to mine lol.
