Proxes T1-R 205/50/17 Tyres

Featured Replies

I am considering getting these tyres for my unmodded Octy RS.

Does anyone have any experience or opinions on these new tyres.

I have been using Proxes T1-S which are excellent.

Thanks guys

Matty

they are even better... I do suggest buying them in 225x45x17... As they are cheaper as this size is more common....

T1-R is quieter and better in all conditions.....

Also it should last longer... But I'll have to wait and see..

cheers

I use them in 16" on a vRS estate and have found them very good in most conditions - the only weakness looks like cold damp mornings they seem to struggle a bit then but otherwise very good.

Thanks Guys

Local tyre dealer refused to put 225/45/17 boots on my octy as he said they were "not standard fitment and would invalidate my insurance".

Any comments?

What is the rim width on the Octy wheels? What is the minimum rim for a 225/45?

Thanks

Matty

Many of us here have been running 225's on their VRS's standard wheels, me included. They fit just fine and have now been fitted for 20k miles without a hitch. As for invalidating insurance, I dont know. Some cars in late 2001 and early 2002 came with 225's as standard because it was difficult to source 205 tyres at the time.

Your tyre fitter is talking rubbish..

You are basically retaining the rolling radius.. lowing the profile and increasing the width.. Thats all.. You are not altering the Load or Speed

ratings..

I've used T1-S for around 21K and am now on the T1-R .....

No problems...

Go for it.....

I agree with you.

His argument was that the narrowest rim that can accomodate a 225 width is a 7J and the Octy wheels (for whatever reason) are only 6.5J

I rang Skoda Main Dealer for an official Skoda line on this and was assured a call back from the service mananger. 27 hours later and no call yet...

Well I rang Skoda again and spoke to "the man". The official line is that if your car is within its warranty period and you tried to make a claim for faulty suspension, steering or anything else "linked" to the tyres and you had 225/45/17 on the rims, Skoda would refuse to pay up as they would say that using non-standard tyres has put extra pressure on the cars running gear.

That's what then man said. That was Skoda Canterbury in Kent.

they only 6'5j on the octy??i could have sworn mine say 7j on the inside of the rim

My car has had parts replaced, the dealers I've used know I've got slightly different tyres on... As there is NO difference in overall rolling radius..

So there will be no difference in loading on the suspension.. I think the 'Man' is talking outa his rear!.....

The argument used is that a different profile will alter the wall flex characteristics i.e. a lower profile will flex less. On the other hand a bigger width tyre on a smaller rim will cause more wall flex so it should cancel itself out.

I am sure it is bunkum but as I don't own the car (it's my company wheels) then I will stick to 205/50.

Cheers all

Matty

I've often suspected that the RS comes with 205/50s since a 225/45 won't fit in the spare wheel well.

I've got a 225x45 on my spare.. It is tighter than a 205x50 but not impossible..
