well peeps as im older now ive been thinking of maybe selling the vrs for a sierra cosworth and was wondering if anyone has had 1 and some info about it

i was thinking of going the final stage on the vrs with the new jabbasport turbo conversion and the lsd which in roughly costing £4500

but now ive sourced a mint RS owners club cossie with big power so i thought maybe selling up and moving on

insurance costs are about the same funnely enough, plus i dont do alot of mileage so im not bothered about running costs

its just the old school car ive grown up with plus i cant afford an escort cossie lol

any views welcome

cheers

simon

One thing you will have to worry about in a Sierra Cossie is rust. Any car you will look at is 20 years old plus now, and even the best kept ones will more than likely have seen a welder at some point. The 4wd ones are still rwd biased, and in the wet they want to swap ends when they have silly power.

If it has been modded, it needs to have been done by someone who knows what they are doing, and it has been well maintained, otherwise you could be in for a wallet raping experience. Just because someone is an RSOC member doesn't always mean they have given the car the maximum care it actually needs.

I had a Stage 3 Sapphire Cossie (2wd) about 8 years ago.

I used it as a daily runner but had hefty fuel bills (i swapped to an Impreza for better running costs).

That aside, apart from very regular oil changes and services, the only time i had to put my hand in my pocket was a duff spark plug.

I bought from a friend, so i knew the cars history, not sure i'd buy one i didn't know.

Downside now is, they all look good on top, but they're 20+ years old underneath, so many are a little tired under the fresh paint.

If i had the chance, i'd still take another one in a flash !

If it's a known members car, i'd take a punt !

I got my 4x4 Sapphire when i was 40 LOL. 300hp and looked after properly, I used it regularly and gave me no trouble at all, including a couple of nurburgring trips. I would personally go for 4x4, you can fairly much do what you like with it even in the wet and not get bitten in the a$$, unlike the 2wd!

That was the one car I've owned that put a stupid smile on my face absolutely every time i drove it  Also the most comfortable car I've had, the leather Recaros are just THE best seats ever.

reliability, running costs when driving normally,i do miss having a nice revving engine upto the limiter lol

Never known my old mans to break down on him yet, apart from doing the original turbo. Running costs when normal aren't amazing, but aren't stupidly silly. If you are running a diesel though it'll feel like you're getting robbed. Sound bit of advice has been said in here about buying one. I'd recommend searching for a Fast Ford magazine with the full buying guide in. As for stuff like mods, very true what has been said in that make sure it's been done by someone with a good reputation. In terms of performance, 370bhp in a 4wd has been my most enjoyable combination so far. Stonkingly quick, but gives the impression of much more useable power yet enough rear bias to get the tail out if you really want to. Some parts are becoming incredibly hard to come by though, so expect to pay a bit more.

About 13 years ago I had a 1989 2.9 XR4x4. Gearbox needed major repairs and the bottoms of both front doors rusted out. emoticon-0106-crying.gif

Oh, and the brakes had a horrible habit of randomly pulling mightily to one side. Whenever it went into the garage to be looked at it they couldn't find anything.

It was a bit tatty tbh. Not one of my better purchases! Bought for £2400 and sold it a year later for £650 :o :o emoticon-0106-crying.gif
