Water - passenger side front and rear footwells

Featured Replies

Hi people,

Looking for some help, with descriptions due to me being a bit thick when it comes to car issues...

I've got a 53 plate Octavia Vrs, in which I noticed a damp smell. Then a wet patch appeared behind the passenger seat. Got the carpet up (eventually) and there was about 2 cm of water in the rear footwell, when I pulled the front carpet up, it was the same. I've only owned the car for about 7months and after looking, the previous owner had an amp in the boot and he ran the wire from the battery, through the car, and to the boot. When I looked in the passenger footwell, I saw a drip coming off the amp wire. Now I'm assuming that over time the water could drip to such an extent to fill the footwells so am guessing it's that.?? However, I've read on here about 'scuttle area' or something similar and wondered if I could check that and clear them out to make sure it's not them.. As I said earlier, bit of a thicko so could do with some guidance on how I'd do that.

Also, any other suggestions would be good so I can check everything at once (car has no sunroof by the way).

One last thing i need help with, is how easy is it to remove the passenger seat? I need to remove it to thoroughly dry out the car, but have to use it daily so want it out, dried and back in asap. Any idiot proof instructions would be greatly appreciated....

Sorry to ask so much but any help would be massively appreciated. Cheers in advance,

John

Hi John,

If there was an amp, then maybe speakers have been upgraded too? Pop off the grills on the front doors and have a check.

They might have cut through the waterproof membrane to fit larger (deeper) speakers.

You would be amazed how much water runs down the inside of the door!! It can then run to the inside door trim and run water down the sill trim straight under the carpet. Quite difficult to notice unless you look for it.

Sean.

I suspect he will have routed the power cable to the amp via the grommet next to the pollen filter, and that coupled with blocked drainage channels from the scuttle panel will be the root cause of the water ingress.

To access the scuttle area with minimum damage you need to remove the wiper arms and then remove the scuttle panel covers (2 part)- don't forget the washer jet hoses number. It is possible to just remove one scuttle panel without the wipers coming off, as in my thirs picture, but extra care is required.

Interestingly, that grommet doesnt exist on my car - its to the left of the pollen filter.

Interesting indeed, we are both 2001s....

Wonder if there's a difference between model shells?

I say to the left, not in the same position though, its vertically against the pollen filter housing at the bulkhead.

Really appreciate your help with that, I'll start digging when I get a chance...

Any ideas if removing the seat is simple?

Thanks again for your help.
