Loss of power, won't go over 50?

Featured Replies

Today I was happily cruising in 5th gear at 60 ish and all of a sudden the accelerator well hmm didn't accelerate any more to be honest i could get it above about 50mph, i quickly pulled over and switched engine off then restarted and everything has been fine since???

how odd i thought.

Has anyone else had this happen? should i be worried? please advise. ty

Sounds like its going into engine managment "get you home safe" mode - you hadnt been revving it hard for an extended period had you?

We tend to drive the works cars at the redline a lot of the time and it kicks in an awful lot then.

thx for reply, i hadn't been revving hard at all just normal careful driving, the car is my taxi and has now covered 128k and to my knowledge has never had a replacement turbo, so i shall see how i get on.

Sounds like the turbo has perhaps overboosted, or you might have an issue with one of the pressure hoses either connected to the turbo or intercooler.

There should be an error code that's been logged for the issue.

But if it was fine again, immediately after starting up then just keep an eye on it and see if it does it again.

This happened to me in my recently traded Yeti - ECU light on and "get you home" mode - switch off and then on again a few minutes later and all ok again - I had been driving it hard ... what causes this to happen - anyone know? (TSI engine)

Interesting, but the ecu light didn't come on at all. Also the very same happened to my friend also a taxi driver in his 2010 octavia a few month back and his has been fine since too, the garage told him they have heard of many octavias doing the same, hmm very strange, all I can do is let y'all know if it re occurs, thx for replies

Depends what you define as 'hard', but in certain circumstances the turbo will shut down, perhaps if intake temps get too hot, in the interests of self-protection, or if it's been asked for more boost than it's physically able to generate; again, because of intake temps or due to an issue with pipework or the intercooler not being able to cool down the air sufficiently. Clearly this can be an issue if you run at high-speed for an extended period, and/or you spend an extended time at high revs.
