Engine Growl at just below 1500rpm

Featured Replies

I have just collected my 2nd Superb Estate. This one has a 140ps engine. I have noticed today whilst driving around town that the engine makes a growling/vibrating noise between approx 1450 - 1500rpm. It fades away as the revs increase. It is only noticeable when holding the engine revs at this speed.

I had the 1.9tdi PD before and this did not make any noise like this one. Is this normal for this engine, has anyone had anything similar to this or is a trip to the garage required?

Many Thanks

Dave

I have this on my CR 170 when cold, as you say it sounds like a bit of a growl at very low revs, but then the smoothness of the CR takes over and everything goes quiet again. It's not too loud, but I can hear it.

This is quite loud from inside the car and still sounds even when the engine is at operating temperature.

Hi fatbadge, I am glad to hear that somebody else does not think their Superb 140 is quiet. I had a 2.5 v6 Mk1 Superb previously which was exceptionally quiet and silkey smooth. I also feel that my 140 is loud, especially at those low revs and pulling away at junctions. For sure as the revs increase the engine is not as noisy, but still not as smooth as I had expected from the later technology VAG engines. I had read somewhere that it could be the oil, so now waiting for next service to make sure the best oil is in before any further judgements!

Cheers

Phil,

Thanks for your reply. I managed to find out the air intake box next to the front grille was vibrating at 1500 rpm. With a little tape job done.

Dave

So all is quiet now...?

I have a similar kind of problem with 1.6CR. Growls on lower gears (1st & 2nd) and revs (below 1500-1800 revs). Since it doesn't seem to be harmful, I've thought that it's one of the characteristics of that engine. Well, I really haven't had a diesel engine car before and IMO all diesel engines are noisy ;)

However, I drove a Citroen C4 Grand Picasso 2.0HDi for about 2-3 months and the engine was really noisy when idling. Fortunately Skoda's 1.6CR isn't so noisy at idle speed.

I have the same noise, could you please explain in detail how you solved it? I don't see the air intake box... where did you used the tape?

Thank you!!

This noise seems to be an TDI engine specific problem for all VW cars that use it. It has been reported and discussed many times in this forum and others.

So, how do we fix it? I don't identify the air intake box next to the front grill...

Thank you in advance

Sorry to bring this up on such an old thread but....

This morning it was -1.5 outside, so I started the car up, defrosted the glass and mirrors then got in it and drove into work.

NO Growling! Lovely and smooth and considerably quieter.

Anyone any ideas why? I can only think of two - first is, I let it warm up at idle for 10 minutes or so before I set off, second is there's some effect that the cold temperature has on the engine.

Thoughts?

I love the growling......................... it sounds a bit like a Subaru

I have the growling on my 170 CR, this might fix it, I'm glad the thread has been resurrected, another job for the weekend!
