Strange insurance query............

Featured Replies

I use an insurance broker for my insurance (HIC) i've been with them since I had my first car. All my modifications are declared - however on my new renewal there is only space for 4 mods on the paperwork. So the rest of my mods arent listed on the documents - especially my Compomotive rims. Now this isnt my fault - what should I do??

Ring and check? I had the exact same situation with AF, all confirmed as being on the policy, just not enough room.

Ok thanks - will do it in the morning

+1 have the same with Direct Line on the listed factory mods.

You have declared mods on Direct Line? Surely your premium is ridiculous?

Companies like this don't insure mods properly either. They simply acknowledge them.

They're all factory fitted, not after market ;)

Interesting, I thought the insurance definition of a modification was something that couldn't be ordered or fitted in the factory.

Anything on the options list doesn't count when I've insured my cars. Automatically covered.

Not with all insurers.

Take the 17" alloy upgrade which comes with sports suspension. This makes the standard elegance more attractive to thieves coupled with a suspension change.

Some insurers dont care, other require all factory options to be listed or they wont cover them in the event of total loss. They may even void your insurance if you dont declare them then make a claim and they're discovered.

It's why even on some comparison sites you'll be asked to list factory mods.

Fabias had an option of 2260vk turbo on 4 into 1 tubular manifold didn't it? :D

When I brought my elegance it had the bigger 20,45,16 wheels on and a spoiler. I made sure the insurance company noted it on the cars file and he said it wouldn't make a difference to my premium as it came out of the factory like it but they needed to know.

Ask for your modifications to be confirmed in writing..

Yup, it depends on what they ask when you apply for a policy. I believe the standard wording is anything not part of "the manufacturer's specification" - depending on how you read this, it's either the basic spec before any options are added, or however the car could come out of the factory. For what it's worth, my insurers don't care (I can imagine they'd get fed up adding metallic paint to most policies!).

If the insurers fail to clearly define what "modified" means, then you should be able to use the commonly accepted interpretation of "modified" ...

I'd love to see you trying to get your point across to an insurance broker. they know the law very well and I don't think you'd have a leg to stand on!!!!

I asked HIC the same question with my mods mate. It was literally because the document doesn't have that much space. :)
