Tyre profiles

Featured Replies

As the standard profile that comes with the Octy vRS is 205/50/17, why have some people change there tyres for 225x45x17?

What are the beneifts of doing this, as Im due to change all 4 in the next couple of weeks?

I'm pretty sure it's because 225/45x17 is a more common size, so the tyres are cheaper and you get more choice. The rolling radius is almost identical.

I'm thinking about it as well as I'm gonna need some new tyres soon. I'm assuming this would be classed as a modification in the eyes of the insurance companies though. If so, I can't really see the saving in terms of

Yep there is far more choice in the 225x45 size.

205/55R16 = 225/45R17 = 636mm

215/45R17 = 626mm

Silly question but does the lower profile give you a harder /crashier ride?

If it doesn't I wish I had seen this earlier.Just recently had 4 new 205/50's fitted :(

A lower profile will spoil the ride. 50 profile is a nice profile for smooth ride and tight grip. I did used to have 40's which is bad news but now on 45's which are better but 50's would be nice :)

225x45 17 + 205x50x17 have an identical profile as the rolling radius is the practically the same. The second number relates to a calculation based on the tyre width, therefore going wider will reduce the number but the sidewall remains the same.

The 225x45 is wider and slightly lower in profile.. But because of the extra width the profile measurement is a percentage of the width they almost

cancel out any difference is overall rolling radius... So your speedo will not

over/under read... and it will not cause rubbing anywhere...

The handling does not really change that much.. Its just there is more choice and they are cheaper....

cheers
