Anyone ever used a Scart to HMDI upscaler?

Featured Replies

Currently got an "old" TV with two Scart sockets. Looking at a new 40" tv from eBuyer but most of the cheaper ones only have one Scart socket.

Between the Sky+ box, Wii and DVD player, only one Scart socket would be a pain, and I don't really want to replace the Sky+ box or the DVD player just to get HDMI output.

Anyone ever used any of these little Scart -> HDMI upscalers? Any good? How expensive are they? Or is there an HDMI lead available for the Wii?

You can get a component cable for the Wii. This is also capable of higher quality than scart. Most large screen TV's have a component connection (although some new entry level Samsung sets don't).

The reason few TV's have more than 1 scart is that its now an obsolete standard. Even sky realise this and if you order sky + now, you'll get a Sky HD box but without the HD sub.

Connect WII via Component,

Sky+ via the scart socket

buy a cheap blu-ray player to replace the DVD player ( can be had for around £70 or less now).

Could be a good excuse for an upgrade, as the blu-ray player will still play all your old DVD's.

Here is a blu-ray for £59.

Doing that will be far cheaper than adding extra video conversion to the process, a scart to HDMI converter will cost more than the Blu-ray player.

WII is not HD, so there is no such thing as a HDMI cable for it.

Bluray or "normal" upscaling DVD player?

If your getting a HD TV, why not get a HD media player, even if you only ever use it for the occasional Bluray rental/borrow.

I'm obviously really behind with TV tech these days - what is a HD media player? Just had a quick look on Amazon and it just looks like an external hard drive?

If it was we've got then yeah it is basically a SATA HD encased in a media player with HDMI outputs ect. The only downfall is you have to upload them onto the player before watching them.

I would do as suggested as above, buy a bluray or upscaling HDMI.

Also don't over spend on digital interconnects. £1.50 will get you a hdmi cable from amazon.

I wouldn't skimp on a tv though. Get the best you can afford as the cheaper ones usually have cheap panels, poor on screen displays, poor sound etc etc.

I have just bought a tv for my parents and that has 2 scart sockets so if you really need them you can get them.

But as said, component cable for wii, ditch the dvd and get a bluray player then badger sky for a hd box and you'll be laughing!
