Different response with clutch in/out

Featured Replies

Who has noticed the difference in engine response with the clutch in and out? It's much more responsive with it in.

Just thought I'd bring it up as I've not seen it mentioned before.

When in neutral? Because in gear, yeah, clutch out tends to take a little bit longer to rev up

Possibly due to the fact than in neutral, you're still turning some of the gearbox, so effectively still loading up the engine making it work just a little bit harder.

Same reasoning for dipping the clutch if you are having trouble starting a car

Yep. It's just the extra resistance of rotating the clutch and the input shaft on the gearbox with no gears engaged. I always start my car with the clutch in, feels like it should make the starter motor last longer (although probably makes no difference in reality) due to the reduced drag.

I'm not sure if this would apply to the newer modern car's but I was told NOT to start my engine with the clutch in on my Classic Mini when cold due to the extra wear on the thrust washers and thrust faces on the crankshaft due to little or no oil present on cold start up.

I've heard on here that starting with clutch in helps the dmf out. No idea how, just seen it mentioned a few times

My car is always started and turned off with clutch engaged.

On our new models you have to have the clutch down to start now.
