What width tyres will fit on 7.5J alloys?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've just bought a really nice set of used 16" Audi A6 alloys to fit winter tyres on for my vRS. They are 7.5J, so is that too wide for 205 tyres? Will I need to go to 215s?

Cheers,

Bob

i have 205 40 on an 8.5j wheel. ok it's a little stretched, but not massivly, so you will have no probs

215 ideally

205's are fine

Quick update...

I have fitted 205's on the wheels and they are fine. Not put them on the car yet as it's still 16 degrees C round here! The tyre fitter said the tyres he took off the alloys were too good to chuck so told me to take them home and eBay them, which is what I did, and got 70 quid! Net result the alloys only cost me 30 quid!! Bargain!

http://www.toyo.co.uk/tire/pattern/proxes-r888 - gives you recommendations for sizes (note this is for Motorsport opposed to road use - shouldn't be any different...)

profile dictates if its 205 or 215 minimum

re stretched tyres - they drive awful - my g60 golf came with 195 45 15 stretched on 8.5 wide bbs split rims looked ace - rode like a dog on a skate board

I would have gone for 215 or even 225 on 7.5J rims. Depending where you look, 205 are only recommended up to 7J or 7.5J, so you are on the limit. You really want to pick the width of tyre that your rim width sits right in the middle of the range of supported widths (if that makes sense).

But, the whole idea of fitting winters is to fit narrower tyres if possible, eg 195, for better grip on snow and ice, so 7.5J rims seems an odd choice for winter rubber?
