Gearbox noise

Featured Replies

Seeings how I'm in a posting mood today, here goes. The gearbox on my car is slightly noisy. I've replaced the oil with 75/80, the level is correct and the clutch is adjusted correctly. The release bearing is slightly noisy as it quietens when I depress the clutch pedal. Under load there is no noise in any gear, unless under hard acceleration in first (which I try and avoid anyway), and it then sounds like a bearing is grumbling. On the overrun in second, third and fourth at low rpm there is the sound like a rumbling bearing, this disappears when the clutch pedal is depressed. It hasn't got worse over the last 4,000 miles, but I wonder if it is a bearing or simply related to the clutch release bearing?

In what way? Bearing do you think?

Release bearing I believe is where the noise is being generated from.

I hope so! Far easier than stripping the box down I'm sure.

have got the same problem on my favorit and it is the release bearing, not the easiest job in the world to do especially on your driveway, but it can be done, what i done was buy the clutch kit of ebay ( think it was about £60) which included the release bearing and friction plate depending on how many miles the car has done might be worth doing it while you have it all out :)

Cheers for that. It's not too bad at the moment, so I'll leave it until the warmer weather and throw a new clutch kit at it.
