I came across this magazine article the other day and thought you guys would find it very interesting when you see how competitive the little 1.4TSI twincharged engine can be with only a basic stage 2 remap and suspension mods.

The Polo is a project car is from APR Australia running APR Stage 2 remap (224Hp/250lbft), full exhaust, intake, intercooler with coilovers, lightweight alloys, front and rear anti roll bars and poly bushes.

For comparison these are the outputs of the other cars they used as the Ozzie's quote in kW's

Focus RS Std ( 304hp/324lbft)

Focus ST Stage 2 (265Hp/324lbft)

Golf GTI TSI-K04 Stage 3 (387hp/383lbft)

Mazda 3 MPS Stage 2 (299hp/317lbft)

So a pretty large power deficit, yet its outperforming pretty much everything else on the track except on the main straight where big power takes over, with the second fastest laptime. Thats why this engine is briliant when mapped. Im looking forward to getting my chassis mods sorted as i already have a quicker 1/4 mile and 0-60 time from GTI Inters in crap conditions with less mods.

FWIW APR have now fitted the Polo with a plate differential, and have a hybrid turbo waiting to be fitted. That would undoubtedly have eclipsed the competition.

And that is exactly why you should do all of the above as you have an estate vRS which would be quality to take out and do the same as the polo did.

How embarassing would that be: beaten not only by a 1.4, but by a skoda, and not just any skoda, its an estate. its genius :D

The best part was that it wasn't even run in so has the potential to go even faster!

I'd love to and love the idea of a mega fast Estate Skoda beating loads of things but not just yet. I will definitely be making some changes eventually. How much would all that cost here?

Well...

£500 for a remap

£500 for a custom exhaust

£150 for an intake

£600 for the twintercooler

£180 for the rear anti roll bar

£180 for the front (I imagine)

£500 for the suspension

£800 for Oz SuperTurimso's :rofl:

Roughly, but when these cars are 5/6 years old expect a lot of hot hatches with 18 year olds behind the wheel.

Stage 2 remap - £500

Down pipe - £500

Intake £150

And you'll be pushing 210-215hp. Add the intercooler and cat back exhaust and you'll be around 220hp id think. Your looking at £600 for the intercooler

Suspension your looking at anywhere from £600-1500 for good suspension kits

Anti roll bar £130

Poly bushes £250 with maybe the same for labour on top.

Brakes anywhere from £300-2000 depending how crazy you want to go

But you could do it on a budget for £2500 and have a mega car.

Judging by the way insurance is going I can't see an 18 year old getting their hands on one of these. My brother can barely insure a Felicia.

Very tempting though. I have a friend who can do all the work for me who is reasonable for labour costs so all it comes down to is parts. I'll start saving and stick 3k to one side for once I'm ready. How much will it affect insurance? I'm with Admiral currently who aren't really mod friendly so will be waiting a year or two before I can do anything. Any insurance company recommendations? Was going to wait until warranty runs out but we shall see.

328's under 17 OZ's. Look like they poke more than standards but not much. Expensive though! 312's with 4/6 pots still looks sensible. They left the rear's as standard too.

They don't have coilovers either, just springs. Race track only though so sod comfort lol. Tyres are 215/45 ZR17 87W as well :D

Where's are inter and full exhaust kit then? *looks at Forge and Milltek* :|

Doesn't say he's gone for any serious weight reduction either but with the Polo, don't suppose you need to.

Just read this again and it makes me smile every time. So glad I opted for the Polo GTI and it's lightweight body and lively 1.4 engine.

Just need an intercooler and I'll have all the similar mods that the APR car has except for I'm running Revo.

On track brakes, suspension and tyres are worth more than any peak horse power figures except for very long straights.

I used to do scooby track days and Steph the organiser had a standard 218bhp UK Scooby but with massive alcon brake upgrade and six pot calipers as well as coil over suspension. On tracks like Donnington he could lap quicker than cars with nearly twice the power as he could brake that much later and carry far more speed through the bends.

Looks like the Polo's handling pack works very well and the brake upgrade is stopping a lighter car than the rest.

They have a slightly different rear setup, than the vRS but its not a huge difference. It also has slightly better std suspension/arb setup, but once you put on coilovers that's negated anyway. Id bet if you put the same handling pack on them they would be neigh on the same with the only differences being a result of weight

Also remember the fastest track setup does not mean the fastest road setup. Take a track setup car down a bumpy twisty B road and you will have a 1.2HTP trying to get by you.

Joy of fully adjustable coilovers is you can set them up how you want. Many make the mistake of setting their cars up too low and too hard as they think low looks best and hard means better handling. Nope.

See some of the guys over on the VW forums on Golfs and Passats running 19" and 20" alloys with zero clearance with the car slammed to the deck. They have spent a fortune on big wheels and coilovers and set the car up so they can just about manage 40mph unless the road is totally flat. Don't get it myself.

Yep I pre-empted that lol. I use google chrome and can zoom in and out easily

gonna get the same HP pack as the polo tomorow . Intercooler , downpipe + the rest , intake .

not even sure if it makes a huge diff ...

just brought my car to HG for the same stuff the APR had , gonna pick it up on sunday .

Well Golf Driver mag has got an APR Polo GTi with a big turbo kit that runs about 270bhp!
