knocking and clunking on braking and driving off

Featured Replies

OK, I have had a series of knocks/bangs/clunks etc and am at the stage now where I am not sure what to chaange next :(

I have had various noises for the best part of 12 months but as of today I have just one noise left....

when braking hard and then when pulling away I get a knocking/clunking from what seems to be the passenger footwell, the passenger says they can feel it "under" their feet.

I have over the past 12 months changed:

last MOT -both front lower arms with new bushes (lemforder parts) - checked today and all still good

-both front balljoints checked - today and all still good

xmas time -passenger side gearbox/engine mount changed when the O2M box went in

couple of months ago -droplinks - checked today and all still good

last week - both front top mounts and OSF wheel bearing

today -both of the ARB Bushes (same part number but looks like the ARB did have sleeves as well which are shot.)

after changing the ARB Bushes today - even without the sleeves in place the knocking over bumps/holes seems to be gone :D (if the sleeves are missing I am guessing it needs a new ARB?)

checked that all accessible bolts were nice and tight, no sign of metal to metal contact that I could find.

Am I left with just the Subframe bush or is there something else that can cause a clunk in the passenger footwell? dont want to spend the time and effort to remove the subframe if its not the cause?

any suggestions folks?

check your wheel bearings if you hevent already. mine was making some terrible noises. took it to a garage last week and the amount of play in the bearing was shocking! i was always under the impression that when a wheel bearing goes you get a loud humming noise. but not in this case. had the bearing changed today all the noises have now gone

ignore my reply..............just seen youve changed the wheel bearing ;) hope you manage to get it sorted

Have you checked the centre exhaust mount, the noise mine made did sound as if it was coming from the front

my centre exhast mount is no more along with the rattly Cat cover :D so its not that. Its definately coming from the passenger footwell area

Inner CV joint? thats the sort of noise and clunk mine's making right now

would you be able to feel that in the passenger footwell though?

maybe its your dog bone mount. there only a few quid from the awesome website.

pikey modded the dogbone when we did the ARB Bushes so its not that (didn't cut the bolt just added some washers to tighten things up a bit)

any more suggestions or is it still looking like the Subframe?

You have exactly the same issue as me. I can hear it when pulling away, more so when the steering is on full left lock. Reversing seems worse on full lock compared to going forward. Also hear it when driving and the wheel drops over a pothole. The Mrs can feel it under the footwell. The only part I have not replaced are the subframe mounts and steering rack track rod ends. Driving me nuts. Was airing to track rods ends.

I have a set of KW's to go on as was thinking the weitecs are shot but I really want to sort this before KW's go on.

Hope you get it fixed and let us know. I am about to hand car to JKM to take a look but feel that i will be beaten doing that as never passed car to garage before

Check the hub nut is torqued correctly. Have has a noise when pulling away when they aren't tightened right as the spline parts of the cv joint chatters in the hub.

Exact same issue as with me.

Friend thinks subframe or steering rack is at fault.

I too am watching this thread with interest!

Good luck

HI Techie

Dont think its the hub nut as there is definate feeling of movement in the footwell. When we had the car up in the air sorting the ARB Bushes we checked all the nuts and bolts we could get to and the knocking did get less, BUT I have a similar knock now on the driver side so tightening up the one side of the subframe seems to have changed the transmission of tourqe on accelleration /decelleration

I rechecked the drop links by getting someone to rock the front end up and down(not easy on my car as suspension is rock hard :giggle: ), whilst i gripped the drop link through the alloy wheel. No play at all.

We then jacked car up. I tried to move wheel side to side and up/down and In/out holding and top and bottom and each side of wheel. No play in bearing. Re torqued just in case.

I do not suspect bottom ball joint as tried to lever that for play. I can almost replicate noise with steering on full left lock and slowly reversing so am pointing towards rack rod end ball joint. The only thing thats moves me away from this is the noise and clunk is very prominent and i would not think a ball joint would cause this. It really feels like something is loose. The car actually wonders on the motorway so I am taking it easy at the moment.

Talk about driving me crazy.....

I feel your pain :D Like I said in the OP I have changed most things and one by one the noises in my head have gone away :D

This is the last one for me but sub frame bushes is a big job :( so just trying to get concensus before going ahead. If I do have to change them then I am going to change the rack bush at the same time as well, as I do not want to go through all that just to have to strip it all again in 6 months

The biggest problem with this knocking it that it is only on pulling away and stopping. Tried getting in with a bar and levering in the usual places and all seems tight and no visible signs of M/M contact?

Hi did you ever get to the bottom of the clunking noise when braking then accelerating. I am having the exact same hassle. Anyone got a solution to this problem. All linkages and bushing are replaced.

Thanks

I think a 2008 Scout is probably an Octavia 2.

I would have thought your wheels would have play I'd it's your track rod ends.

Have you checked the engine mounts?

Obviously if it's going over bumps and pulling off. Could be your engine rocking which is causeing the noise.

did you check your radiator mounts? I had an issue like this bottom radiator mounts were knackered and it was banging off the air con unit when i pulled off or stopped, I tied it off with a cable tie and stuffed some plumbers lagging in between and it sorted the noise.

I had a similar noise. I only just found it yesterday. Was some part of my suspension track rod end or something around that area knocking against my intercooler pipe. Never saw that it could have been that as when car has been on the ramp, it wasn't near the pupe. So never suspected it was that causing the issue. But the mechanic just thought he would try and twist the intercooler pipe slightly to allow room and noise has stopped instantly. Cars are mind boggling at times!

Hope u sort it buddy.
