knocking and clunking on braking and driving off

Featured Replies

Re-check every bolt you disturbed; all it takes is for you to have forgotten to put one up to torque.

Remember that when checking the bottom ball joint, check it with the weight of the vehicle acting upon it, unless you are levering it from underneath of course. Reason being, when the car is lifted, the lower arm will drop, applying tension on the ball joint, so it will appear tight.

I reckon on a steering related issue, give the inner and outer joints a good wiggling, and the rack mounts.

Ever done your front disks?

You can get a knock when the carrier bolts have come slack, or if the backing has come off the pad.

Not sure you'd feel that through a footwell tbh, but I've never been in the passenger side in a car that's done it.

Would also check for play on the gearbox mount.

Might also be worth checking your anti-rollbar bushes. My car was making some horrific noises just because the rubber had deteriorated a bit

did you check your radiator mounts? I had an issue like this bottom radiator mounts were knackered and it was banging off the air con unit when i pulled off or stopped, I tied it off with a cable tie and stuffed some plumbers lagging in between and it sorted the noise.

I know this is an old topic but just in case anyone else is suffering from knocking noise, I notice that I can push my radiator and it’s moving which has then knocked on something else. Finally finding the mounts they were shot.

Pushed back;

worth checking this for anyone who cannot find the knocking sound.

Mount is found to the right of the radiator:
