Air Conditioning Noisy

Featured Replies

Intermittently I get a whine that sounds a bit like a gearbox noise, that stops as soon as I turn off the air conditioning, the noise rises and falls along with the engine and I believe the unit is belt driven so would change speed with the engine.

I say it's intermittent, and it may be when the weather is warm and the air con has to work harder. The car is going for service next Monday and the dealer said they would listen for it, but it may not occur now that the weather is cooler. Has anyone else experienced this? I don't want to go out of warranty next March then find it needs an expensive job on thee air con.

I've noticed exactly the same noise and mainly when ambient temperature is high and in Greece summer is really hot. Your post is just like you are driving my car. I also opened a new thread last July, "A/C compressor Buzzing". My dealer replaced my compressor but the sound is still here. The other interesting thing is that the part number of our compressor also fits many 1.9Tdi VW Group models.

I remember first time i noticed that sound. I was freaked out. I thought it was gearbox problem. My dealer tried many times to hear the sound but nothing happened. The other day I turned A/C on and TA DAH the "whine", "buzzing", "I think I am a broken Super Market refrigerator" noise appeared again. I drove back to my dealer and he noticed the sound too. First he checked the refrigerant liquid (freon). It was perfect, then he told me that he was going to replace the a/c compressor. So I have a new compressor with old whine sound.

Thank you for that, my first feeling also was that it was a gearbox problem, and it seems to only make the noise when the weather is warm, though not necessarily hot, and when it's having to work harder.

As you still have the noise it seems as though it's normal so maybe I don't need to worry about it.

Yeap thats right, there is no problem at all. I tried it all Summer long till late September (overtime).

Could be a flexi pipe touching some part of the car. I had a similar rpm-dependent noise in a Saxo with retro fit AC (which was crap) and the issue was resolved by wrapping pipe work with foam where they went through the bulk head.
