Yeti / Freelander comparison

Skoda and VAG are Doomed then.

Every Section of this forum has vehicles in the range with common faults to some of the range or owners vehicles.

Water Leaks, Coolant Leaks, Oil Useage, Body Corrosion, Wheel Corrosion.

Then the Audi, SEAT & VW forums are pretty full of similar stuff.

Looks like we best buy Far Eastern get the long warranty, but avoid Toyota.

Yes there are common problems around the VAG range however if you look at virtually any car manufacturer related forum you will see this sort of thing. From my experience of and reading around Skoda seem to have fewer faults but when they do dealers generally seem quicker to sort them out.

If you have time pop into the Fabia II section and look at the many many Oil Threads for mk2 Twin Chargers.

just the 2012 ones should be enough.

Since 2010, rebuilt Engines, Breather Modifications, now New Engines being fitted to 2011/12 models,

& owners having to fight to get any problem accepted then rectified..

into the 3rd year and Skoda/VAG still do not say where the fault lies on some engines.

That is the same with VW, & SEAT.

Some Customers now get Free Oil or Refunded on what they have been buying to top up to keep running,

Some cars have been rejected,

and many owners are knocking their head against a brick wall.

Same story with corroding Dark Chrome wheels & Dealerships.. some get an easy Warranty Exchange and new wheels.

Others knocked back on wheels that are exactly the same as those that get replaced.

Skoda/VAG will be getting some really bad publicity just shortly i would think.

Print Media and TV hopefully.

More bad publicity from Cases in Australia over the Twin Chargers i would imagine,

Great Engines when all is well which is the majority.

3 monkeys from VAG tho, See, Hear & Say no evil.

or is that EMU, bury the head in the sand.!

(or someplace where they can not see)

I agree.not all vehicles in a manufacturer's range should be tarred wth the same brush, but if you check the reliability ratings for most JLR products (even the fab XF) not evrything's rosey in the garden! The thing that really puzzles me though,is how come the Octavia/Yeti reliability seems quantifibly better than Golf/A3/Leon?Are we all just old duffers who potter about in our cars so we never break them?!haha!

I have to agree with the twin charged engine problems, but this is only one engine, a big fly in some thick ointment. I used to have a Seat Ibiza (1.6TDi CR with zero problems) and I read about a lot of issues with the 1.4 petrol twin charged 1.4 unit on the Seat forum. Some seemed OK but a lot had the issues you mention George.

Having just had 3 magnificent years of FL2 diesel driving we were faced with what to buy with less outlay... After testing a ridiculous amount of cars we kept coming back to the Yeti as being the only one "close" to the FL2's atributes. Now, two months on, having gone from the luxury of the FL2 down to a base 1.2 Yeti we no longer need counciling but do miss our F2.

9 months of Yeti ownership has come to an end... Just could'nt cope with the 1.2 and DSG marriage. Pulling out into trafic was alway a hit or miss affair.. Very hard to get it just right.. seemed to be all or nothing with the power band. ( by comparrison drove a manual with the 1.2 and it was brilliant ) So, what did we buy... After missing the FL2's beautiful power delivery we went and got a... DIESEL Yeti. What a difference, the DSG/Diesel combo is brilliant. Economy is much better than the F2 and around town a better drive. I'm sure the F2 is better in the rough stuff - has anyone seen a F2 / Yeti off road comparison?

And actually, to compound the crassness it is referred to here as the "SZ5"

Perhaps they could have lessons from Skoda's webmaster?!?

Oh - the above is the link.

And I hope that this, too, has been really helpful to you. There is no end to my willingness to try to help, is there?

sz5 refers to the trim level, ie the top one with four-wheel drive!

Interesting - I don't have the problem with my 1.2 DSG but in situations where a quick pull away is necessary I use S mode anyway. I'm not sure it does much to the actual performance but it sure feels/sounds better with no hint of hunting for the right gear.

Thanks for the input Fred.. my 1.2 never seemed quiet right. At 60kph it would already be in 7th gear and then had a big lag until it found the right gear when a hill came up or I had to accelerate. It had a turbo seal modification they said was a factory upgrade and felt better but by then I had already ordered the Td. And yes, Sport mode did help but it was then too revy.. Just could'nt get a relaxed drive but still loved the car enough to get it as a diesel.

Here's a comparison - the Yeti got through the mud (which really is a lot, lot grimmer than the photo shows) but the Freelander driver wasn't going to take the chance...........

  • 1 year later...

I've previously had a couple of FL1's and considered another FL1, an FL2 and a Duster before buying the Duster. What put me off each was:

FL1 - They're all getting on a bit now and you need to be lucky to get a good one. MPG isn't great (I got 37 out of my two) but they are relatively cheap to buy

FL2 - This is what I really wanted but couldn't bring myself to face the running costs or the huge price of even a fairly miley one. I think they look good although the 2010 facelift has made pre-facelift cars look old. As others have said they are pretty big now too.

Duster - Very nearly bought one of these ex-demo. Top spec diesel and the interior is just like a 6-7 year old Megane or Clio which is fine by me. I like the look but close up the build quality isn't great and you can see where savings have been made. Was eventually put off (by the Dacia dealer) who says there are rust issues on a lot of RHD Dusters and they are having to fight Dacia for repairs and refunds.

Yeti - Simply seemed to be best of both worlds. Near enough FL1 size but with Fiesta MPG. Very comfy and lots of VAG components which are a good combo.

Well..... I would have done in mine.... The FL1 is brilliant in mud, just like the Yeti. I can't get enough mud for my Freelander.

I only got 38mpg average over 41,000 miles out of my Yeti. Fiesta mpg? I thought they were better than that.

My Freelander is averaging about 32mpg, which is what I expected as an auto. It has bigger AT tyres and is about 70mm higher now than standard and has a load of other mods which I could not do to a Yeti.

I'm averaging 54-55mpg in my Yeti which is about the same as the 1.6 TDCI Fiesta I had a couple of years ago. I'm getting 45-50mpg around town and 60-70mpg on a run. Highest average in a single journey (Lincolnshire back home to Hertfordshire) was 73mpg.

My FL1's were both manuals and both did 37mpg regardless of how/where you drove them.

I can't tell what model you have, but my remapped CR140 4x4 DSG Yeti seemed to be about the same economy as the 1.2 tsi. It would do 50mpg at 60mph, 43mpg at 70mph and around 28-30mpg around London

My FL1 is auto which is why the economy isn't as good as the manual. It is about 5mpg less according to the official figures.

I spend even more time now around London than I did when I had my Yeti so I would expect the economy to be worse. My average speed seems to be around 6-8 mph. but it is still quicker than using public transport for the places I go to.

Mine's a TDI 110 2WD.

It does 65mpg at 60mph, and about 50mpg at 70mph or round town.

That seems to be a snapshot probably based on the Multidot display? My 110 SE 2wd averaged 47mpg over the 3 years that I owned it. It occasionally showed 60mpg but a fill to fill calculation is more reliable.

Fred

Hi Fred

That is based on fillup to fillup. The maxidot overestimates by 4-5mpg on average.

The way I use my car I will typically use a tankful on a run around the country for work and then a tankful on the commute/shopping etc so I get a good view tank by tank and keep track of the average as well.

That explains much. That was the most economical model available when I bought my 4x4.

I don't do manual gearboxes anymore. Not in London.

In my experience the 110bhp 2wd Yeti is certainly the most economical plus having the lowest VED of the 2.0cr range. This was a consideration when I bought my first Yeti but my motoring needs have moved more towards a relaxed life now and the new one fits my current needs perfectly.
