Date for fitting Winter Tyres.

Featured Replies

Just wondering if anyone has switched over to their winter tyres yet, or when they plan to do so.

I had been planning to change mine over tomorrow, but looking at the forecast, where they talk about milder than normal weather ( albeit with the possibility of lots of rain), now I am not to sure, as I have read that there is excessive tyre wear at temps above 7c.

Mid Nov i reckon unless temps plummet over the next week or so.

Consistent below 7C is the time to do it.

depend what part of the country you are in.

Mine booked in to go on tomorrow as we usually have a lot of frosty mornings by now - althought the forecast for the next week is pretty mild - sods law

For me unless the extreme snow conditions become the norm for winter in the UK, I'll stick with the Primacy HP's fitted to both cars.

Neither got stuck or had any issues in any winter conditions.

Sharkrider had winters on his vRS today when temps were around 19 degrees max in the south west. They were definitely underperforming until he got into damp cooler muddier conditions when the tyres started working again.

It's been around 11 here. I think if it was 19 I would swap back ASAP and break out the barbie and sun cream!

I'm going to wait until it gets colder then will go down to my local tyre fitters to get them swopped over, so there's no need to make any booking (the fitters will do it for a few beer tokens!)

Cost me a tenner when they were sorting a puncture on my summers. Forecast for 5 degrees tonight but then warm by the end of the week - wish it would make up it's mind :wonder:

Had similar concerns about fitting mine too early with it still being quite mild, but I've been down the local fitters today and had them changed over. Gives me a few weeks to get them "bedded in" ready for any colder weather. I hope it snows soon so I can try them out

Long term forecast on accuweather has temperatures down below freezing at night in the Midlands whithin two weeks.

I put on winters on my wife's fabia on Sunday as I'll not get another chance for two weeks and then I'll be putting my Passat's winters on.

Bought my Passat's wheels and tyres in the middle of last winter, unbelievable difference on snow, frosty roads, slush and even standing water. If you commute to work in the early morning I'd say they are the best money you can spend.

Not only could they save your life or prevent you having a bad accident they will also save your expensive summer tyres from excessive wear through winter and if you get steelies they will save your alloys from the road salt.

Cheers

Landed in Prague today and everyone has them even though its 10c here.

Saw an a5 on 19s with them on. Be interested to see how much cheaper they are here as I wouldn't fancy my chances in the UK getting a set of 19s!

this is true... I had mine done just before the weston meet, and it was bloody warm! however on the mud, and the moss, they were better ;) basically I've gone for mine at the beginning of Nov.... its gonna get pretty cold, pretty soon up here..

I've booked a local mobile fitter to swap my rubber this Saturday. The roads are always colder than the air temperature. My commute is at 7am which is before sunrise for the next 4 months

My Summers are down to 4mm so want to eek another summer out of them.

Whilst its mild, frosts are forecast for next week.

In Scotland I accept they're a wise investment as it will be cold enough.

Central England you'll be lucky to see sustained temps of 7 or less for the whole of winter. Early morning/late night, but daytime the temps are usually above 7.

I kid you not the other day I saw someone in sandels, shorts and a vest eat an icecream! It was fricking cooooooold! Even though it was actually 12C.

Ever been on a winter night out in Newcastle? B)

Mine have been on since end of September as my regular front tyres needed changing & I couldn't be bothered messing about. Otherwise I'd have put them on last weekend.

Saw an old 3 series BMW with winter tyres on this week. Still can't imagine it being any good in the snow being rear wheel drive.

I think we're all panicking a bit. Can't imagine this year being like last year. Tyre companies must be raking it in!

It never fails to amaze me why people think like this, ALL that matters is the temperature when you will be driving, so if you set out early in the morning before the temperature has risen and come home after it has dropped thats all that matters - it can be 20° during the daytime but if the car is parked up during that time then that doesn't matter.

There is no correct DATE to fit winter tyres, fit them when the temperature is consistently 7° or lower WHEN YOU WILL BE DRIVING.

I'm doing mine this weekend. The temps *have* to drop soon and it's been cool enough in the morning several times this week.

Which is what I'm saying the reasons are for not needing them myself. I cant see the point for an occasional evening drive or the hour in the morning.

Managed OK so far.

Yes sorry gadgetman that bit was aimed at the thread title posted by the OP.

I dnt have winter tyres but will be refitting the narrower spiders so atleast If all else fails its not my 19s that. Get scratched or bent :)

Winter tyres fitted to both the Yeti (215/60 R16 Hankook W310 on VAG steel rims) and the wife's Fabia II Elegance (195/55 R15 Bridgestone Blizzak LM30 on mytres steel rims) last weekend. Son's Fabia I Classic hopefully will be fitted with Goodyear Vector 4seasons tomorrow to replace the Federal tyres it came with. These have all distorted despite being less than two years old, leading to an unbalanced type wheel wobble at certain speeds :S

Temperatures have in the main been between 10 and 15 degrees this week, with only one morning getting down to 4. Mild compared to this time last couple of years. Winter tyres coping fine though and have also improved the grip levels in the recent rain over the factory standard Continental PremiumContact 2's fitted to both cars (not so premium contact in the wet  ).

Oh saw my first winter tyre advert in the UK the other night for Continental tyres, must have cottoned on there's now a market for them over here

TP

Waiting until it consistently gets down to 4 degrees

Last year I fitted my Passat's winter tyres when it was that cold I couldn't feel my fingers, it was that windy I could hardly stand up and it was snowing!!!

I believe the moral of this tale is not to leave it too late. The weather can turn very quickly :)

Cheers
