They can be replaced yes, and the part isn't expensive, I paid around £20 for a replacement, for my pre-facelift, which shares the same part with the vw polo. I got the dealer to swap it as the car was in for something else and they owed me a favour, but I put up a thread about it a while ago and got a lot of advice in there. If you look at my content history for threads I've started you'll find it, or I'll dig it out when I'm not on my mobile.

Easy DIY, angle the mirror glass as far down as it will go, this provides just enough space for you to get your fingers in the gap between the glass and the plastic housing at the top of the mirror.

Pull the mirror off gently, it's held on with plastic tabs / clips. Once released becareful as there might be an electrical connection on the back for the heating elements.

Once the glass is off you'll then see how the indicator / repeater lense is secured to the mirror, a couple of Torx 10 screws if I remember correctly.

Replacement is a reversal of the above, job done!

Sorry being a muppet but when you say pull the mirror off gently I take it I am getting the plastic cover off ie the whole rear of the mirror to gain access? Or am I prising the glass out of its holder?

You just need to prise the glass off, once it's off you can then gain access to inside the wing mirror / plastic housing to gain access to the retaining screws.

Here is a picture of the back of the glass to give you an idea of how best and where to apply the 'pull' pressure...
