Replacement Wing Mirror Glass

Featured Replies

I recently bought a replacement wing mirror glass for the passenger side but was unable fit it because the wiring to the heating element was too short.

When I compare what appears to be the original glass with the replacement, I noticed that the connectors on the replacement are positioned towards the outer end of the glass while the original has the connectors positioned at the inner end, nearest the car body. The wiring is definately not long enough to reach the replacements connectors as it just enters the mirror housing.

1) Can anybody confirm that the connectors should be at the end nearest the car body and that I haven't already got an aftermarket mirror glass and chopped wiring?

2) Has anyone had similar problems fitting replacent mirror glasses?

Cheers

Yes, I definately have the correct side. I have laid them next to each other to compare their profiles. The only difference is the position of the connectors.

I guess you got a mirror glass from ebay, if so that is correct mine was the same, all I did was make up 2 little joining wires as required.

Haha, you mean the "correct" side , as Skippy was after the passenger side glass.

could i just derail temporarily and ask how you removed the original mirror glass? Does it just prise out?

Mine isnt broken but i want to replace it for ashperic glass you see. I have a heater one from ebay but, if as you say, the wiring is to short im thinking i should stick the new glass on the old backing plate.

It does just prise out. I used a 2" paint scraper taped up with masking tape to prevent damaging the paint on the housing. Working top and bottom it eventually popped out.

That sounds like a good idea. It's probably easier than trying to get a refund and doesn't confine me to buying an original item if it ever needs replacing again

They are a lot cheaper on ebay as well.

You will find that the mirror is for a Golf. When I changed mine I bought Octavia specific mirrors but the wiring was on the wrong side, after getting in touch with the seller they informed me that the shape of the Octavia/Golf was the same & they didn't realise the connectors were on a different side.

No big deal as others have said, get some spare wire and extend your loom in your mirror slightly

+1 Matthew's reply.

Why the Golf & Octavia glass is the same shape but wiring is different is ?
