How much can a clutch handle

Featured Replies

Hi guys, Iv got a skoda fabia vrs 1.9tdi 130 pd and I'm wanting to give it a little more pulling power, now different places say they can get this or that out of just a chip, but how much can I go to and not blow the clutch????? Cheers guys

It all depends on how you drive it and the condition of the clutch.

Realistically though anything over 300 lbft and you are starting to push your luck in my opinion.

It's driven nicely 90% of the time but it's that 10% that's going to kill it. Ok that's cool bud thank you.

Clutch/flywheel is limited to 280lbsft I believe. Seat mapped the PD160 to 260lbsft. My old map made 300lbft and that started to slip if booted below 2.5k.

So basically I should keep to 280lbsft or is that pushing it a little? Gees 300lbsft that pretty harsh what was that like to drive?

Personally I'd be more worried about the turbo at anything over 300lb/ft, if its standard that is.

Was smooth. You find most maps will make around 300. My map kept the same boost values. With diesels it's all about the fuel not boost.

Yea the turbo is standard ATM lol but I'm not wanting a car that is too over the top just want a little more poke than standard if that makes sense.

Ok so then it's basically hit and hope the clutch is alright lol did yours ever completely go or just slip? Ok that's cool fair one

Just slip when changing at 4k from 2nd to 3rd.

It's just having the right clutch for the job. :)

And having the power delivered smoothly can make a big difference too. Some cheap options are peaky with torque spikes that don't do the running gear many favours.

Yup. I've had a spiky hybrid map, and now have a(nother) Sachs clutch and Jabba flywheel sat next to my TV ready to install on Thursday.

And if you're in doubt about maps, Shark. Bit of a trek for you, but they do self-tuning boxes so you wouldn't have to do a 12 hour round trip, and the prices are still pretty comparable to most Revo dealers IMO. Nice smooth map and your car will seriously thank you...

yea that is a bit of a trek like, iv found a decent one down here they seem pretty decent (celtic tuning) if ever you may have heard of them, they seem pretty genuine and wanting to help, the cars going in for the re-map on thursday they say they will go all the way to 190bhp and 300lbft of torque depending on the state of the car (which is a mint lol) but im a little worried if im honest any horror stories or go for this would be really helpful

If it really is a true 190bhp on a standard PD130 turbo, I'd expect it to last 5 minutes and heat soak the SMIC even quicker...

Yeah, that sounds a lot. For reference, I got 190 from a stage 1 on my old Leon, which was 150 as standard (better turbo and FMIC as standard being the main differences).

yea this is what i am thinking so they say they can/will make it how i want it ie the torque and bhp so im thinking 160 bhp which will be around 260ftlb of torque that sound like it wont kill my running gear and turbo or am i still thinking too much :/

I`d go with 170ish bhp & keep the torque bellow 280. As long as you drive correctly and use the rev`s (once mapped it will/should pull to the red line) then theres no reason for the clutch to give up. Mine ran that kinda map at 125000 mile clutch, was fine. Expect the boost to be raised, just throwing loads of fuel in will result in loads of smoke and not much else as far as i`m aware.

+1, I had Performance Torque map mine and asked them to keep the torque below 290, no problems with the clutch so far mapped at 25k now on 80k, doing 50miles a day, and I do like to put my foot down when the roads are clear :).

No wonder my clutch is slipping then!

Awesome GTI remppaed mine earlier this year and the figures were as follows: 171bhp & 355lbs torque

My clutch is slipping like mad when I boot it, so the power isn't any use to me now!

What sports clutches would people recommend as I'm thinking of replacing it soon? I've been told Helix are good!

I would say that's quite an over-read figure, from experience. I've just bought a Sachs clutch from Jabba, however I believe if you go over to TDISport then there's currently a group buy on SouthBend via Darkside Developments, it might be worth looking at those.
