Shop around. I have just today had my belt, tensioners, and water pump done. With of course new fluids. I went to a V W dealer, partially as I know a guy in the parts department and got it all for a 'family and friends' rate. I paid £127 all in, and that is all V W parts. The old water pump had to go back as V W recondition them. A VW Audi indy dealer fitted it all, at a cost of £160. Bottom line is I paid total of £287 which seems pretty good compared to some silly quotes. Best bet is see if you can find a decent independent dealer, who at this time of year with Xmas approaching might do you a good deal. My car (vRS late 2006, 48K miles)and the old belt looked pretty good, no hint of wear to the human eye, but the guy who did it said you cannot visually see if it is tired. He had a Polo outside with a grand worth of damage after the belt broke. I would not do it at 40K or 4 years, but plan to change it again in 5 years time at around 100K :dull: with my annual 10K a year.

Love the car still.
