Uprated Clutch

Featured Replies

I'm looking to upgrade my clutch due to having way too much torque for the standard one to cope with!

What would you recommend including costs, brands and places to purchase them?

Thanks

If you are running very high torque, change flywheel to single mass, and fit an organic Helix clutch. About £800 all in. You may also want to consider replacing the diff carrier RIVETS, with the special bolt kit, if the crown wheel comes off the diff carrier, the gearbox goes by by.

Moggy, I assume if my gearbox has been apart to fit an LSD I'll probably already have had my rivets replaced by bolts (the rivets are obviously single-use and it doesn't make sense to replace with more single-use items if there's a bolt kit available)?

edit - obviously I'm not actually asking you what I have since you didn't do the work, it's more of a "is there any sensible reason that the gearbox would have been rivetted back together or is it fairly safe to assume it's been bolted" question...

The rivets are on the diff crown wheel, so when the LSD was fitted they are no more, as they were part of of the bits removed and replaced.

Great, that's one less thing to worry about! Cheers :)

Decided against an uprated clutch!

I've had a few issues recently which have really annoyed me, so I'm reversing the remap next year and getting a standard clutch fitted.

I'll then pass Fabs over to my wife and buy a new car. More than likely going back to an expensive petrol!!

Thanks for your posts though

What kind of issues?

Just not getting on with it?

I'm just annoyed that when I bought my remap, they didn't tell me it would put additional strain on my clutch - maybe I should've of known that, but I'm a novice with stuff like that!

So now I'm £260 down (remap and dyno run) and need a new clutch/flywheel. That's why I've decided against an uprated clutch, because my wife wants the car next year when I get a new one. I'll get the remap removed and purchase a standard clutch if it lasts that long! The cost difference between an uprated clutch and standard one is loads, hence why we'll remove the remap and also my wife will struggle getting insurance.

Thanks for checking though.

You didnt think that an extra 40ish bhp would put extra strain on moving parts?! Sorry to be blunt. If its just a remap, then you need to adjust driving style slightly so not to 'boot it' below 2-2.5krpm, this should look after the clutch. A standard clutch should be fine on a stage 1 remap if driven responsibly.

Dont you think the clutch could have been on its way out already, and you see the most obvious thing that the remap was done before it went? Who did the map out of interest?

It was Awesome GTI. But obviously they're not to blame as you're correct, I just need to adjust my driving style. Have been taking the car higher up in the revs before changing and appears to be better!

I know clutch strain is something I should've known, but unfortunately this is the first time I've had any sort of car tuning carried out! I'll learn my mistakes!!

How much is a standard clutch? I know when I was looking at uprated clutches with DMF's I was getting quoted over £300 just for a DMF?

Rather than throwing the remap away, how about asking Awesome if they'll adjust it? Reduce the torque to less clutch fecking levels. :)

Regarding the clutch, how fecked is it? Sudden WOT applications on the motorway in 5th and 6th don't really count. As this will put most strain on the drivetrain. Though I got in to the habit of doing it as the instant rush was addictive. Ive since trained myself to roll soothly onto the throttle.

Hiya mate,

Thanks for your response - apologies I didn't get to this in time.

I've had the remap done today at Awesome GTI and got to say it is AWESOME!!

I requested a dyno run after the remap and it produced 171bhp with 355lbs of torgue! I'm well chuffed with this remap.

I drove it back home and was smilling all the way. I'll just have to take it easy though as I'll defeat the object of having a diesel car.

Anyway thanks again for your response.

Cheers

This is your problem mate.

Reduce torque to acceptable levels and standard components will be fine.

If that's an "Awesome" 355lb/ft, then it's probably already only at an acceptable level already..... ;)

he's right, my car came from the PSNI and they had already done this.

ive never had a problem with mine from that was done.
