Average MPG

Hi All

Is there anyway i can reconfigure my average mpg read out?

Ill always take note of what the live mpg is and the average to try and fine that sweet spot but no matter how i drive, stuck behind traffic doing 40-50mph or having a clear run i cannot for the life of me seem to get it above 44mpg

I know these cars can do better iv seen it or myself and it always does not balance up when i work out how much fuel it has burnt when i go to fill it up, can anyone help?

Your injectors might be dirty, and diesels like long runs(Take longer to get warmed up) and when was your fuel fiter last changed? To zero your readout press the button underneath your right stalk. Lucky you getting 44 I get on average 27 :giggle: mind you mine is a mapped petrol ,but have only done 6 miles this month( cycle every 20 miles a day)

It depends so much on your style of driving. Not wishing to deride your driving but are you a clog-and-anchor driver or do you come off the gas when you see the need to stop or slow down well ahead. Forward observations and reacting to what you see can save ££££`s over time. also keeping to the speed limits uses less fuel. Drive like an old fart for a month and see the difference.

Have you done a manual full to full check on mpg? The trip readout may actually be correct . Stuck in traffic I'd get that kind of mpg.The other day I got less than 30mpg round town. It's only when I do long coasts down hills or up to junctions in 6th gear that I get closer to 50mpg.

Probably worth using fuelly (see signature) for a few tanks to get a good average, also reset your long term average on the computer at the same time to see the error. Looking at other posts there are ways to calibrate it using VCDS, without changing your speedo/mileage readout.

My mpg over-reads by about 2mpg, so not too far out. Most of my driving is motorway commutes at constant of 70-75ish, that gives me 47-49mpg normally. I'm told that the mpg should gradually increase as the engine beds in, so may average more like 50 after another 20k miles.

Is it the PD or CR 170 out of interest?

I hear all the time that the CR is far cleaner and much better on Fuel... I've got a 2008 Leon FR TDi 170 with the PD engine and i average around 42mpg, 44-45 on a run and going by all the other reports i've seen i think anything from 38-42mpg is pretty standard on the PD170!

jeez i can easily get 44mpg in my petrol lol.

im good at eco driving, i used to be able to get 60+mpg out of my mk4 golf tdi, i know every car is different but from 1.9tdi to 2.0tdi cant be worlds apart (my golf was 150pd)

Its a PD one the last ones actually before they switched to CR, iv bought some of that diesel magic stuff, going to run that few a full tank.

I was out for a long run the other night, the mpg read out said id done 42mpg but when i worked it out id had done 53mpg, consisted of both town and open road driving

Its not a mojor problem as i know its good on fuel but its just finding that sweet spot, if i was low on fuel in the golf i knew how fast to go and what gears to use to make it last to the fuel station where as i could go like the clappers in the skoda or drive like miss daisy and apparently it makes no difference, i know it does but not according to the read out

exact same boat moved from 1.9tdi PD in fabia vrs remapped to 173bhp I could get 60 whenever I wanted and 65mpg on a long run (real world not just form computer but it was almost spot on) The 2.0 TDi CR im still working it out for the ultimate MPG but its still under 4000 miles best ive had on a heavily loaded run was 53mpg but I had to work a lot harder for that than I did in Fabia :( If you work it out let me know.

I was similarly disappointed on swapping from a 1 to a 11 diesel. I previously could easily get 55mpg on my 25 mile commute - 60 if I tried hard. This dropped to low 40's. Somewhat dissappointed, I put this down to the larger, heavier vehicle. After installing RARB and SupaPro bushes to compliment the 312 brake upgrade, I had a geometry check done and was first and formost struck by the increase in feel and directness, even my partner was impressed. Once abroad a few days later, I noticed the instant read out for consumption was now up in the 50's despite speeds being 80ish. So maybe the extra fuel is being used to scrub off your tyres.

Ema_jane, my vRS is almost identical to yours if I remember correctly, same engine, age and mileage.

Doing the steady 60mph run you describe my average MPG display sits at around 53mpg, but varies from 46-60 depending on acceleration and speed.

Sounds as though something is amiss?

It is worth noting that I had my injectors replaced FOC by Skoda (I'm sure you've seen the thread) shortly after I bought it about a month ago and noticed a welcome 3-4 MPG improvement.

My commute is 70 miles each way at a constant 60-70mph so the engine gets nicely warm each day...

Ours is a 55 plate 140 dsg Elegance, now done 46000+,every litre that is put in goes into a log I keep along with other cost.We have pulled a caravan of 1360klg for about 6000 miles over the last 6 years. In solo I can get 65+ mpg and few times 70mpg. Caravan towing is about 30 mpg but for all that it still works out that over the 46000 miles done it is still 42 mpg average

I officially now don't like you :'(

I only managed 37 on average in my cr but I drove it like it was stolen.

i think mine just plucks a number out of hat as it not relate to my driving, eco driving to me is not using anymore then quarter throttle, staying in the right gear so it does not struggle and when it comes to hills, which there are plently of round here i build speed up before and let it slowly drop off up the hill. Not so eco driving is kicking its teeth in and over taking everything in my path...still 40-44mpg :wonder:

where does it get the readings from? im guessing it takes signals from various sensors around the car and adds up the sums...i think my ecu is alittle bit thick :giggle:

Hi All

Is there anyway i can reconfigure my average mpg read out?

Yes it can be calibrated with VCDS

That is providing it is consistently over reading by the same percentage each time, my Superb (170CR) was 10% optimistic and a Yeti (140CR) I calibrated was 9% optimistic, they both now read spot on (well within 0.5 mpg)

Iv seen 70mpg once, in my golf, i was coasting down a hill

If I coast downhill in mine, the display reads --- mpg, just after it reads 199 mpg.

Use fuelly or similar and track it over a good few tank fulls to get a good mix of journeys, traffic, outside temperature etc.

The Maxidot can then be corrected to match what you get from Fuelly by a local knowledgeable member with VCDS.

For your info, I average about 49mpg on a PD140, and I don't drive like an old man (though I look like one), but I don't drive like I stole it either. My maxidot used to show about 56mpg when in reality it is about 49.5mpg.

Click on my sig to see what Fuelly looks like - dead easy to use - just make sure you always fill up to a full tank.

You definately have the display on the single trip? As opposed to cululative.

I did mention that I got 70mpg sometimes, that is not going downhill but using the A21 from Hastings to Dartford toll, mostley it reads 65mpg on same run.

its getting worse!

just did a 30 mile run at about 60mph due to the crap weather and its read 38mpg...how?!

i know these moor roads are not great for getting outstanding mpg but thats lame!

Keeping in mind i have done this run many many times before and never have got such a low reading

I have a TDi pd scout and I have to say anything under 40 mpg is almost unheard of!

I realise the scout is lower power than the VRS but due to the extra weight of and drag of the 4 wheel drive system I would have thought the VRS should get better fuel economy.

On the way back from hull to holmfirth the other day I had the trip computer reading 69 mpg (stayed in inside lane as I spent most of the journey on phone) although knowing the accuracy of the display the actual mpg was probably more like 50. Still not bad for a 4x4. My long term average is 45 mpg (over last 18 months & 30k miles)

Just coming up to a thousand miles in a 1.8TSI, average for a tank full was 39.5 MPG. Driven 2 thirds on motorway/dual carriageways 60-80mph, some full throttle overtakes aswell. Best average I saw on Maxidot was 54mpg with a bit of help from an artic in front.

well ill be heading back to the dealership soon due a knackered DMF that is on going, should i mention it?

it has FSSH no with no experience being spared but obviously with them not being a wear and tear part could the injectors be to blame?

It has become very apparent that this car has been used as a town car, as it seemed pretty clogged up when i bought and felt like i had not had a good run in while, i got some Diesel Magic running through at the moment but its catch 22, i need to burn the tank of fuel with it in but its burning it too fast and i cant afford to keep throwing fuel init
