New MOT certificate

Featured Replies

Just got my car MOT'd and was really surprized when i was given a white A4 sheet of paper as my certificate! Apparently it came into use around 3 weeks ago!

It is really a normal piece of paper with no security marks or anything! MOT tester agreed with me how stupid it is and that it is soo easily copied. Reckon that there will be a surge of used cars with false MOTs as most buyers won't know how to check online to see if it's real or not.

If VOSA what everything online surely the old certificates would of been better for security reasons for buyers of cars?

Lol, just bought a car and thought exactly the same, Wtf is this? Was my first impression.

Needs a lot more publicity on the matter.

VOSA have no money, it's a cost cutting exercise. The MOT status can also be checked by phone. They would be doing away with the printed certificates if it were allowed.

They look like a lot of them are going to get thrown away, but in theory having paper copys will no longer be needed as you can tax vehicles online.

How many people know about being able to phone or to look on the net? When phoning will it be like trying to phone the dvla up and waiting for hours to get though? When you're car hunting and find the car and want to buy it there and then how do you check up? Its not as easy as just putting the reg number in as you need either the v5 number or the MOT number. Wonder if people are gonna start putting MOT numbers in for sale ads lol

I like to think I keep up with things and its the first time I've heard you can phone to check an MOT!

Must admit when i was handed a white A4 sheet, i thought "is that it" seems very plan and nondescript and possible very easily lost, for an unorganised person.

Got a fresh MOT not long ago too, I wondered where the certificate was till they showed me. Stupid decision been made imo.

maybe they should spend the money they save by sending a reminder though the post that way I won't have been caught out this year and forgot that my MOT was ment to have been done in August! My own stupid fault for not checking surprised that I wasn't pulled over the number of times I drove past a police car lol

I too have forgotten to MOT my car before, getting a reminder to tax and insure your car but no reminder for the MOT seems a little strange.

What were the repercussions out of curiosity?

The old certs had a peel off sticker in the bottom corner for you to put in your car, with the expiry on.

Surely if people are intelligent enough to get behind the wheel of a car and drive, they are intelligent enough to have a system in place to remember when to renew their documents.......I say ditch all reminders

And yes, the plain A4 MoT certificate is absolutely shocking

There is also a text reminder service that you can subscribe to. Not having a MOT is a £60 non endorseable fixed penalty, plus fines for anything that they find wrong with your car. I may print my next one on a nice pastel blue plain paper.

So you judge someone's ability to drive by their ability to remember a day 12 months from now?

A simple FOC email from VOSA is all that is needed. My insurance company manage it, the DVLA manage it, my local dealer manages it, even the bank manages it.

For those who don't want/need it can unsubscribe. Simple.

Last year I put a reminder on my phone, it was nicked. Perhaps I could invest in a calendar for the fridge. Even better still - a reminder from VOSA a couple of weeks before it expires!

Tried that lol the date disappeared after about a week, no sticker with the new one

Nice!

Brilliant solution!

I'm married, but don't get a reminder in the post to tell me when my anniversary is

I'm married too and couldn't tell you what day I got married other than it was a Friday in August.

The reason you get TAX and Insurance reminders is because they are after your money.

VOSA dont get your money the MOT station does so maybe you should get your MOT station to send you one.

Even so I dont see why they are going to plain paper as the test station have to pay for the certificates as far as I know.

Reason on aother site was that before VOSA supplied thecerts FOC .Saves money this way as garage buys paper .I can never remember the exact date of mine .But since (in theory ) enforcement is auto now -they say you won't get stopped to produce .And you can always get the ata on line ---http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/Mot/DG_10020539

You need the number off the V5 .

Ditto - you can pay for a reminder now though - luckily my garage send reminders FOC.

Repercussions, fine and also your insurance is invalid. I know someone on uk-mkivs who had forgot her MOT and she had an accident, her insurance refused to pay out and she was left with a written off car and no money :'(

Not everyone has a elephant memory and i struggle from one day to the next to remember stuff but amazingly i am still able to drive.

I am all up for reminders! I put everything into Outlook now in recurring appointments.

 I send all my customers a reminder about 3 weeks before their MOT is due.

Staggered :(

I don't profess to have an elephant memory either

What I do have the ability to do is keep all my car documents together in a safe place, hang a calendar on the wall, and write down relevant renewal dates on said calendar - hardly rocket science

Good for you - i don't even remember to change the calendar from one month to the next let alone write events on it.

As I said, i use Outlook, but don't flame people for not remembering things. We aren't all wonderful
