3rd Service

Featured Replies

Ok, my 08 TDi Scout has had its 3rd variable service today and came back with the following recommendations:

1) haldex oil change due - is this not part of standard service? Can't recall seeing this in service schedule.

2) bump stops splitting - I don't tow and don't do any serious off roading, is this really likely to be an issue?

3) slight play in rear prop shaft bush

4) haldex oil seals weaping

5) front drop links slight play.

Now I've been told that from this list the Haldex unit needs urgent attention but not being a mechanic I would appreciate any independent or informed opinions you good people on here might have.

Garage can't give me prices till Monday as parts department weren't in so I don't yet know how much all this will cost.

Oh and rear washer isn't working apparently. According to the mechanic it sounds like the problem is behind the dash, will be 3 hours labour for them to rip the dash out just to investigate. Now I am aware of all the problems with rear washer leaking into the boot, but has anyone got any experience of a problem behind the dash?

I look forward to all constructive comments and thank all in advance.

And.

Should'nt most of that be under warranty??

Unfortunately car is a May 2008 so 6 months out of warranty, not to mention 63500 miles, so no warranty to fall back on :-(

Sounds pretty poor for a car of that age, might be worth asking Skoda for some "help" with it, esp if its all FMDSH.

Removing the dash to fix the rear wash? Do me a favour!

Oddly my drop links are fooked too at 40k!

Had my tie rod ends replaced at 35K.

Apprently quite common?? which makes me wonder as i had my van done around 36k too :wonder:

That's what I thought but the mechanic suggested that it sounds like the water is escaping behind the dash? Knowing the common problems in the rear washer area I think this is one I will investigate myself. To be honest I very rarely use it (hence I didn't realise it wasn't working) so I may well not even bother - does anyone know if this is an MOT failure?

I think my biggest problem is the Haldex, has anyone had this work done? If so what was the cost? I don't want to risk a Haldex failure as I believe the unit is £2k+

Are people saying the drop links are the same thing as the tie/track rods?

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the advice m0bov.

All full Skoda service history, even break fluid and 1st MoT. May well go to Skoda cap in hand depending on costs I get quoted.

Had the leak behind the dash on mine. The pipe runs through a clip behind the glove box and the clip rubs through the pipe. Dealer fixed mine under warranty.

The water pipe for the rear washer runs inside the wiring loom to the rear lights etc. It emerges from the loom behind the boot trim just above the wheel arch.

Mine has been replaced (don't know when, before I bought the car anyway). The fix seems to be a simple replacement pipe all the way from the front bottle/pump, through the firewall near the brake master cylinder, across the dash and down into the sill on the passenger side.

The pipe is obviously an OEM VAG repair part. Proof, if needed, is that it has the required connection to suit the pipe leading to the boot lid. It is also the same diametre black corrugated plastic pipe as the original.

My point here, is that a replacement part exists which would not require fixing the old pipe - the original would simply be made redundant. Hence no need to spend three hours messing with the dash!

I would expect it would take at least an hour though. However, IMHO it is very much a fix that you could DIY.

Thanks nobrakes and FriendlyFire that makes it sound a bit easier. Out of interest where does the pipe come through the bulk head?

Is it an MOT failure if rear washer doesn't work?

Also anyone know what the service interval is on the Haldex unit?

Have you tried it to see where the liquid comes out. On my old Fabia the rear washer would clean my near side front wheel, lol

That sounds like a new and useful feature!

No I have not yet had chance to look at it. Might try taking glove box out today and see if I can see anything, if weather improves of course.

No, it's not an MOT failure.

The Haldex oil change interval is 40,000km for my 2010 4X4 Estate. That is for the 4th generation Haldex.

If Haldex service is every 40000Km (25000 miles) its a wonder they didn't say anything at the 40000 mile service as there is nothing in the service book to suggest it has ever been done.

Even more worryingly there is nothing in the service book to sugest it has ever been done (I got car at 20months and 32000 miles) - Best get it booked in to be on the safe side, whats the cost of the Haldex service?

Thanks for that chriskite, in that case I don't have to worry too much about getting it fixed.

Anyone know what the typical cost of the Haldex service/oil change is?

Also what exactly are the "Drop links"?

Thanks.

I'm replacing mine tomorrow

I had the Haldex service done on my Audi S3 for about 100 quids, at about the 40k, then 90k miles mark...although this was not the 4th Gen Haldex so could be irrelevant. It was literally an Oil and filter change in the unit, but apparently the oil is injected in, due to the location. And a VAG spanner is required.

But they are saying the seals are leaking?? Shouldn't be at your mileage!

Thanks for that JJBS3, thats what I thought but don't really want to take any chances with the Haldex. If I was to get under the car to have a look myself what would I be looking for? I assume the Haldex is mounted where I would normally expect to find a transfer box on a 4x4? or is it in place of the rear diff? (Sorry I'm rather ignorant of the layout of this type of 4 wheel drive system)

Thanks.

Thanks Grizzle, that makes things a bit clearer, not an ultra urgent job then I would say.

Are they easy for a DIY'er to change?

I googled ''Anyone know what the typical cost of the Haldex service/oil change is?''

The second result, from an independent:-

Haldex Oil Change - £43.71

Haldex Oil and Filter Change - £74.66

Both prices are quoted using genuine VAG parts.

Call Skoda & ask, then go to indi if vastly different!
