Auto-dimming mirror

Featured Replies

I'm getting annoyed with my auto-dimming mirror. If I'm driving on the motorway in close traffic it dims to such an extent that it's black and all I can see are dots of light on the cars behind. I want to be able to see the rear view properly, not shadows.

Is there any way to adjust it or turn it off?

Thanks in advance

PS This is only at night. I've never had a problem in the day :S

There is usually an on/off button on the bottom of the mirror (can't remember if the MKI Superb gas one or not)

mine has button on mirror under glass when its depressed the green light goes out

I've checked the manual and doesn't seem to be anything about turning it off, just how it works.

Page numbers are usually irrelevant as most manuals are different but I'll have a look.

I'll also look for the button, but under the glass? How do I get to that?

Cheers for the replies

No - it is on the bottom edge of the mirror housing in the middle - it is a push for on push again for off type.

That's correct, p56 of Skoda Superb owners manual:

Switching on the automatic dimming

– Press the button - the warning light lights up ⇒ fig. 51.

Switching off the automatic dimming

– Press again the button - the warning light goes out .

If the automatic dimming is switched on, the mirror dims automatically

depending on the light striking the mirror from the rear. The mirror has no lever on

the bottom edge of the mirror. When the interior lights are switched on or the

reverse gear is engaged, the mirror always moves back into the basic position.

Note

• Automatic mirror dimming operates only properly if the sun screen* for the rear

window is not in use or the light striking the rear of the interior rear-view mirror is

not affected by other objects.

• Do not affix any stickers in front of the light sensor, so that you do not impair the

automatic dimming function or put it out of operation.

Just to resurrect this, I can't see any kind of button anywhere on the mirror housing, and I can't find anything in the manual to tell me how to turn it off.

Am I missing something? Can any helpful Briskodian take a pic of their mirror to show me the button please.

Thanks

there you go

I am glad I spotted this thread. The auto dipping mirror is the one thing I REALLY don't like about my FL Octavia - and now I know how to disable it. TY to Bodie for the picture above showing where to feel for the switch. :)

I have had 3 MK1 Superbs my first, which was an '04 TDi Comfort had an auto dimming but NO WAY of turning it off. It had one optical sensor at the bottom of the mirror which was pointless as when a car came up behind me the shadow of the central rear headrest would be in the line of the optical sensor so it hardly worked anyway.

The last two of the MK1's I had, had the switch that has been referred to. Easy way to tell is if the green light is on, it is working, if it is off so is the auto dim function.

Damn it! I don't have the button and it sounds like the same set up as your '04 (mine's a 54 plate) so I guess there's no way of turning it off then, except cover the sensor with tape :(

Looks like tape will be the only option, either that or a little bit of blue tac in the hole to cover it - at least that way if you sell the car it's easy to remove.

When my 2001MY Passat B5's mirror failed (usual leaking problem), I made sure that when I replaced it, I bought the newer one with a switch as my wife's Polo 9N has a switch on it and its very very useful - saves you "losing" idiots driving with sidelights in town traffic where someone has headlights on.
