Using both ignition keys?

Featured Replies

My Skoda is just 1 year old, and so far I have only used 1 keyfob.

The second lives in a drawer as a spare.

Should I alternate key use for battery life/charging,or for any other reasons?

I used to do that for my 3 series, changed key every month. Have to admit i rarely use the 2nd key for the octavia, sometimes take it away to work if i need to pick up the car from the wifes work on my way home. Wouldnt think it would affect the battery much.

Not really a big deal! If battery life is a concern then better to use one until it runs low then use the other until you can get the new battery. Otherwise you go to the drawer for the spare and find that is dead too.

Also when it comes to part-ex or sell, you can present a brand new unused key - first impressions and all that!

If you don't intend keeping the car long then alternating may remove the need for a new battery.

I use one key all the time and keep the other in a drawer. The spare one is then handed in when the car goes for service, saves taking my main key off the keyring.

I mostly use the one, and the battery that was in it when I bought the car is still good 5.5 years later. I use the other occasionally to make sure they both stay synced to the car.

If your 3 is the same as the 1 series I used to have it recharges the remote battery when "pluged in" to the ignition. AFAIK the Skoda just has a standard key built into the remote so wont recharge teh remotes battery.

Remember some functions are tied to the key, so need to be programmed for each key. Such as auto locking, auto seats, come home lights etc.
