Which Fabia for best MPG (No Diesel Please)

Featured Replies

Am I right in thinking that there are 2 versions of the 1,2 TSI engine? We have the 105bhp with DSG box and really struggle to get above the low 40's. Anything over 70 on the motorway just kills the economy. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but I regard Skoda's figures as pure fantasy.

The Yeti, like the Fabia has the aerodynamics of a shed. Over 70mph and the economy will begin to drop fast. Air resistance squares with speed. The faster you go, the harder the engine has to work and the more fuel it will drink.

...the Fabia has the aerodynamics of a shed.

Coefficient of Drag is 0.326 according to carinf.com. Can't find the important number (CdA) though.

From the same site:

Fabia hatch 0.326

Octavia hatch 0.300

Roomster 0.330

Superb hatch 0.300

Yeti 0.370

Fabia and Roomster nowhere near the Octy and Superb, Yeti is worse than I thought! Compared to the Octy and Superb, they are sheds.

The Calibra is 0.29, regarded as one of the most aerodynamic cars, and the current Golf is 0.31 just for comparison.

EDIT: just for laughs, a Ferrari F40 is 0.34 :D

thanks for the figures,

what abouit the fabia estate, it has the same mpg as hatch according to the brochure.

Estate is the same at 0.326. The figures for aero efficiency are not there though, so it's only part of the story.

It is a bit more aero efficient than the hatch though, that's why the vRS estate is 1mph faster than the hatch, it's not because of weight ;)

My 1422cc TDI is 2mph faster than the TDI diesel hatch with same engine. 107mph for hatch, 109mph for estate. All academic I know. At an advanced drivers track day last year I had 119mph showing on the clock. This was a GPS 110mph. Engine remained away from the red on the tacho and was very smooth. Damn...off topic again!

There are two versions an 86PS and 105PS, only the 105PS comes with DSG. There's only 1mpg between them all though.

As others have said the Fabia is a bit of a brick, we find 50mpg is easily achievable on a run to the coast 60-80 miles of A/B roads at 40-60mph. Motorway at 70-80mph low to mid 40's mpg. 105TSi DSG.

The EU figures are done at very low speed and very slow rates of acceleration, modern cars are mapped to to be as efficient as possible on these very light loads. Even the Extra Urban figure only averages 39mph and only has one slow acceleration upto 70mph.

For high speed motorway driving a big sleek saloon with a big lazy diesel is going to be more economical than a small engined, small but tall hatch.

At 80mph my Passat is nearly 10mpg more economical than the Fabia even though the official combined figure says the Fabia is 5mpg more economical.

For city centre driving the light weight Fabia is more economical then the heavy Passat.

Shows you need to buy a car that suits the majority of your driving.

Yes but it has wings and diffusers to create downforce, that's why the figure isn't so good.
