Quick Tyre size question

Featured Replies

Hello all!

My front tread is running very low, but my rears still have plenty. Would it be ok to change both my fronts to 225/45/17... and leave my rears at 205/50/17?

Cheers

If it helps, that amounts to a mere 0.39% difference in circumference. Current safety advice from tyre manufacturers is that new tyres should be fitted to the rear.

Which is odd considering on FWD cars the car with the new front tyres was the most controllable ?

For an explanation of why, click on the link below, then on Look after your tyres followed by Why put new or less worn tyres at the rear? Other tyre manufacturers offer similar advice.

your car would fail an mot with wider front tyres than rear... which would be reason enough for the police to take action based on it being unroadworthy.

put the 225's on the back.. shred the 205s quick and get 2 more 225s

New tyres on the rears not the fronts? Is this the case for "better to have understeer than oversteer skids on a wet road" arguement? I'd rather have my front wheels follow the intended line through a corner and sort out the rear of the car myself if things go a stray. (So says Mr Really Experienced Car Control Driver of Hampshire, not!)

But it's your rear wheels that give you your straight line stability, braking stability, cornering stability & ability...

I used to rotate my tyres so I had to change all 4 in 1 go... bit too expensive now, so it's new rubber on the back...
