what's normal for engine oil consumption?

Featured Replies

The oil was changed by myself 6500miles ago (filled to the top of the dipstick, and I used a VW filter + Quantum vw504/507 fully synthetic oil), and I noticed around 1500miles ago it had gone down to a half, and I added about 250ml of oil to top up.

Today I've just checked and it's down to below minimum (yikes!!!) so I topped up with maybe a litre to bring it all the way back to the top of the dipstick.

Now I only do long journeys in the car, typically 25-30miles twice a day for work.

Pretty shocked at how much oil it has used this time around? Is this typical of this type of engine at this mileage?

Oh and no signs of oil on the driveway etc. engine is clean!

I think the problem is that cars vary. On my 2004vRS owing from new to 64,500 miles in 2010 I only topped up once - with 270ml at about 6k. Otherwise the level went down between services but not enough to have to top up.

I have topped up my 2007vRS once in 6k miles...

Mine hardly uses any between services - only once had to top up inbetween (stealer topping up to bottom of dipstick methinks).

However when the oil filler pipe becomes detached from the block, it uses quite a bit in a very short time!

When I got my Furby I checked it a couple of times a week. It was about 9 months old with 7300 miles on the clock, so I thought being a new engine it might use some oil.

Apparently not. It didn't use any.

Now on 62k and it doesn't use any between services. I never check it - unless I'm planning on doing a decent trip (300 motorway miles in one go) but even then it doesn't use any.

I've never had to top it up. Ever.

80k on mine, and it doesn't use any oil between 10k service

Before the service did it use a lot of oil? - If not then unlikely to be a sudden coincidence that the engine has worn out on the service day! - suspect service linked

Any blue smoke on acceleration? Any oil in water? Any oil around EGR or oil filter? Are you sure it's not overfilled (Is dipstick OK - no bit of plastic stuck/missing)? Did you use the right amount of oil on the change (rather than fill to mark) and if so, did it fill to the proper mark?

So your oil consumption was 250ml in 1500 miles then about 1000ml in the next 5000 miles?

Why did you wait 5000 miles before checking the oil again when you already knew it was using a little?

To say that your oil consumption is low would be an understatement, it is incredibly low and nothing to worry about. Nevertheless you should check it every 1500 miles and only top it up to halfway on the dipstick, this will help reduce windage losses, you should also check that the engine breather isn't blocked since excess crankcase pressure can increase oil consumption.

Neither my Fabia or Octavia vRS use any oil between services - I was told when I bought them not to gimmer around, strain the engine at low revs or thrash it for the first 500-1000miles and it seems to have worked. One mechanic told me to rev the PD engine instead of using the torque from new and it will glaze the cylinders and reduce oil burning.

Dunno if any of this is true as I thought all engines were bench run in now but it worked for me. I think not giving an engine stick before it has warmed up also helps.

Engines are not run in on the bench (unless you have expensive high performance exotica) but they are built to incredibly close tolerances these days, the only important components in any engine which have metal to metal contact are the camshaft/valvegear and the piston rings/cylinders, the cam needs about half an hour of running at moderate revs once warm to bed-in, after that the piston rings next few hundred miles are critical to compression levels and oil consumption, if you're too gentle with them the bores will glaze and it'll never be right.

If you've bought a new car the chances are the cam already got bedded-in when the car was run after manufacture and again during PDI at the dealers, so you can simply warm it up properly, fill it with fuel then take it for a long cross-country run using ALL the gears and building the revs as you go. Fill it up again then thrash it home. Job done, it's run-in, get the oil and filter changed and it'll be good all it's life.

Not amongst the most popular engines here but my 1.4 mpi hasn't used a single drop of oil. Was surprised as my old Favorit, on which the engine is based, at the very worst drank well over 1 litre in 400 miles.

Coolant slowly disappears on the Fabia though which it did not do on the Favorit.

Oil consumption was 250ml in first after about 5000ml.

Then I checked it again 1500 miles later (approx) and it had dropped off all the way to the bottom, so had to top up 1litre. So it's used maybe 1litre in 1500miles?!?!

I was quite shocked when I saw it, I've never seen the oil that low before, and it certainly shocked me at how quickly it dropped. It means I'll need to check it every other fill up now, which is a pain I guess.

I will check the breather and stuff next week on my day off. By the time I get home from work, it's pitch black outside

For the record my Golf R32 (i've owned since brand new) has done 100,000miles and it doesn't use a drop of oil. I drive that car like it's been stolen, it's lived a very enthusiastic life but it don't use any oil. But I do change the oil very frequently on that car.

I guess the Fabia hasn't had such a careful owner from new? Because u guys are all saying your cars dont use any oil too

My apologies I misread your post, yes that's heavy oil consumption.

Your R32 sounds like you've run it in correctly

Your Fabia sounds like the turbo may be failing, get it checked, they can let go quite suddenly.

hmmm failing turbo..... how would one go about checking it out?
