The vRS is a thirsty beast

Featured Replies

Something is amiss somewhere. I'd been driving my mum's 1.4 Pug 207 since I sold my Clio 182 and it was doing roughly 37 mpg as an average in between refuelling. I used to stick £40 in every two weeks. I put £40 in my vRS on Saturday 19th and pretty much ran out today despite the average consumption being pretty much the same. It's not the price of fuel either - V-Power has actually gone down in price since I last stuck any in my old dear's motor.

Still, it's only done 300-odd miles and the consumption meter does get a lot better when it's warmed up a bit (managed to get 43 mpg out of it on a relatively long run on Sunday which is better than mother's car ever managed).

so how many miles did you get to the £40? 300? And whats your trip showing?

I get about 30mpg round town which I think is good! 40mpg on a 100 mile trip last week, which I also think is good!

My old Clio 172 used to get about 32 mpg, driving the same route and the same style of driving I get about 40mpg out of the VRS. now apporox 9000 miles on the clock. when it was new I was getting about 32 mpg. So it Will get better.

Im now on day 6 of ownership and Betty has done around 400 miles. I find I get 30 - 35mpg around town and she manages 45mpg on the motorway. Hoping that figure improves slightly when cruise is fitted tomorrow night.

I take it easy though on the motorway normally sitting around 65, which is the reason I find myself in a Furby vRS as I was fed up with the DPF problems in the diesel.

I average 30-33 round town stop start, and 45ish on the motorway. If you drive like a truck driver you can get scary figures, my record is 57 from a run from Warwick to north Birmingham.

Sounds like I'm getting about the right figures then. I can only assume that the Pug was using less fuel than the trip computed estimated. Poxy French electrics!

Plus its cold now so takes a while longer to get to optimal temperature. Mine is down this month quite a bit - reckon it to be 30mpg or so as doing town work this month. Combined its normally high 30's and on a run 45 is easy.

only used in town 35 to 38 mpg sticking to speed limits

The economy is very much determined by how much time you spend accellerating

Also I suspect you'll be driving it on the torque your used to in the desiel which means the VRS will be running more power.

The other problem is if your travelling at speed the VRS is as aerodynamic as a brick so kills fuel economy.

But how many other 1.4 5 doors will do 0-60 in sub 7 seconds and a 1/4 mile at 100 in sub 15seconds.

Performance like that doesn't often pair well with ecconomy

Just out of curiosity, what's everyone getting regarding tank range?

anywhere from 300-350 mainly 300 though as stop start commuting kills the economy

Ownership hazard!

As us Yorkshire folk say, "ya don't get summat for nowt!"

300-320 is my usual, costing roughly £50 to fill

I get about 300 miles for 60ish quid of vpower.

Ouch. Guess that's the price you pay for that power. They are really nice cars and love them but no way I could do with having to drive at 60mph to get decent fuel economy.

Our recent trip to Germany doing silly speeds saw 54mpg.

I dont see why this is much worse than 70? I tend to see the same cars who go hoofing past at the next build up of traffic, and usually cruise past them when i dodge through the traffic more efficiently then them.

Agreed. At the times of day that I travel, on your average 50 metre strecth of dual carriageway there are 1, maybe two cars on the inside doing 60mph, and 40 cars on the outside bumper to bumper speeding up to 70, then slowing down to 40, then speeding up to 60, then slowing down to 30 and so on.

I quick like wafting along with the cruise on, and then with the fuel you have saved at 60mph, you can burn it off on the back roads using those flappy thingys

Cruise is very bad for fuel economy as it doesn't fully come off the throttle when going downhill. If you lift your foot off completely while in gear it uses no fuel at all "---" is shown on the display but with the cruise engaged the best you see usually is 200MPG which means it's still using some fuel.

I'll call shenanigans on that one. Downhill my instant econ usually shows "---" until it reaches level ground and requires some throttle.

On my first two fill ups I've averaged 43mpg (that was mostly down to one motorway / dual carriageway trip) and 40mpg (general flaffing about) - certainly can't complain. Seems about in line with my Lupo GTi - and the Fabia has an extra 55ps and weighs approx. 20% more.

I've gone from 42-45mpg (370-400 miles a tank) to 37-40mpg(330-360 miles a tank). Putting that down to winter I guess.

Definite winter fuel here :( mpg is falling bloody winter, got caught out this morning hail and sleet while on my daily 4 mile walk :( absolutely soaked through to the skin, took ages in the shower to warm up

Mines gone from 35-40mpg to around 25-30mpg!
