Snow!

Featured Replies

Still not convinced. If it did snow down South then everything grinds to a halt anyway and my work closes so wouldn't need my car and would just stay in or go to the pub :)

This is true. The councils etc are just not geared up to cope.

the roads on the moors are a little more tricky when the snow comes down compared to down south, it can clear one minute and 3 feet deep the next

At last snow....

Winter tyres tried for first time today and got to say ... Brilliant!

Going up a hill this morning, transit van stuck spinning back wheels, behind that a new Tigra stuck spinning front wheels

Behind that me, before I drove round them and up the hill!

Last year I wouldn't have even got to bottom of the hill never mind driven up it.

Money well spent and if you are contemplating them, my advice is buy.

Winters on OE 18's by the way.

Yes, I've had 4 fitted to my std 18" alloys this week and very glad I did, very bad snow in the Queensbury area of BFD tonight and Wainstalls area of Halifax where I live.

You spend all that money on choosing the car, paying extra for lovely metallic paint... then for half the year you stick on black shopping trolley sized steel wheels? Some even go one step further and dress them with lovely £15 eBay wheel trims.

If you are going to invest the £500+ for winter tyres that will be on the car for half its life then at least fit them on the standard alloy wheels.

I can't afford the required outlay for winter tyres (which is a shame as I appreciate that the cost is in reality halved with the reduced outlay on the less used summer tyres together with their obvious and proven safety benefits), but even if I could I'd be fitting them to my existing wheels, if for nothing else to stop my vRS looking like an Ambiente with a boot spoiler :giggle:

I just got them fitted onto my alloys that were on the car... summer tyres are now in the shed.

As far s I know, the 92 load index on the tyres that come with the OEM 18" wheels is just because you can not get a 91 load index with that size/profile combination. 91 should be fine and is the rating on the tyres supplied with the 16" wheel Octavia models. As they are winters they are most likely 205/55/16 91H, and H is up to 130mph if I recall.

If you have higher spec ones that are 91V then you'll be able to do the max speed of the car!

H is 91mph

H is 130mph, there is no 91mph tire.

L- 75 mph - 120 km/h

M - 81 mph - 130 km/h

N - 87 mph - 140km/h

P - 93 mph - 150 km/h

Q - 99 mph - 160 km/h

R - 106 mph - 170 km/h

T - 118 mph - 190 km/h

U - 124 mph - 200 km/h

H - 130 mph - 210 km/h

V - 149 mph - 240 km/h

W - 168 mph - 270 km/h

Y - 186 mph - 300 km/h

91 is the LOAD INDEX and has nothing to do with speed.

So load index has an H rating? Or was he speaking about speed?

91 = Load index

H = speed

Two separate things.

I know that mate, I'm referring to g_tee post - H is 91mph.

Ah! Indeed...... well by seeing all these replies he will now also know this! :giggle::thumbup:

Missed the morning coffee?

Also on maxidot you can tick the winter tire options and set the max speed of the tire, and it will warn when you exceed the speed of tire.

Just finished it! So will now (hopefully) be on top of things again! :giggle:

you were too far South then, another dump of snow overnight on Friday night. All gone now but it was sheet ice this morning again. I fell twice on the school run (walk)

I am alas! I'm hoping for some snow in January, February or March down here! :giggle: If nothing is coming I'll find some reason to venture north I'm sure.
