Heavy steering?

Featured Replies

Noticed on my 1.4 Classic Fabia (2000) that the steering seems heavy when going round corners and also heavy when parking sometimes. Milage is 50,000.

Any ideas??

Help appreciated.

Thanks

Tim

could be leak in the power streering, low fluid level or the rack is on the way out, i would check for leaks first, hopefully a simple fix.

Could also be the PAS sensor on the way out, and a dud battery as the PAS draws a large current. Both are known common problems on Fabias!!....B)

I'd check the PAS fluid level first. If that's ok, then the rack's clearly not leaking.

In which case check the battery next; as noted a weak battery can give you heavy steering. Finally, suspect the sensor (most expensive to test).

If the PAS fluid is low, check the rack for leaks, and brace for wallet pain or top-up depending on whether it's leaky or not.

Mine had the same symptoms when the PAS sensor was failing, luckily it was fixed under the Skoda warranty.

The power steering reservoir on the 1.4 mpi is difficult to get to and hidden somewhere under the battery box.

True.........

......got to remove the battery box because the MPI has the bigger diesel battery box....unlike my car which has the smaller box so you can easily look at and top up the PAS fluid! B)

Many thanks as always for all your replys :)

I know it might sound odd but it really depend on how it feel harder as often really wrong alignment can cause that as well, but then you willsee it on tyres as well.

Sounds silly but it could be under-inflated tyres.

When my 2004vRS's steering rack failed it was virtually immediate - drove up to Shropshire - fine - tried to get out of drive up there - heavy. Tried to drive home and decided after a mile to turn back and dropped the car at the Oswestry dealer.
