Snow Sox

Featured Replies

With the iminent possability of ice and snow, just wondering if anyone has any experience with Car Snow Socks, saw them in local Asda for £35.

i've got a pair for my Octy VRS and they were hugely useful twice last year once when i got stuck on compacted snow outside SWMBO's folks house as soon as i put them on the car was easy to drive over the compacted ice and snow also put them on the car to tow one of the older neighbours(who'd been winding me up for buying a skoda) RWD Omega up the incline in the street to his house and a nice warm slice of humble pie.

well recommended just don't leave them on, on tarmac

Definite once you black stuff take em off or they'll look like hookers stockings ;)

I was not aware these existed and very tempting particularly given the reports on the factory fit Bridgestone ER300's.

Also I now have the same 205 tyre width as my Audi A4 1.9TDi but the Fabia 1.6 CR must be lighter so less ground pressure....

they are a very flawed bit of kit i think.

I do agree that they help with grip when on snow, however on tarmac they tear apart in minutes, leaving you £35-75 down.

They way i see it, you get stuck in snow so you put the snow socks on. You then get out of your side road onto a semi cleared bit of road that will tear up you snow socks, so you then need to take them off. So, do you stay on the cleared bit and hold up traffic while you remove them, or do you pull back into the snow, remove them, and then struggle to get back off of the snow onto the cleared section.

Also, when they are removed your essentially still using summer tyres well below they're operating temperatures so have much less grip than normal anyway.

Personally i think it makes ALOT more sense to buy winter tyres which are not only better than snow socks, but if you only use them between say dec-march will probably last a fair few years so its a good investment.

Well I'm purchasing the auto sock ones only on the front driving wheels as the long forecast is heavy snow end of December / jan

think ill just stay at home, sounds a lot simpler

now if only my boss would see it this way :giggle:

I'm a support worker so I need to be there, love my job so I'd walk if I had to but these snow socks do look good though just to get you out of bother but of we have bad snow again this year I will definatly get winter boots on each corner saying that I've just bought 2 sets of new trims 15" at lidl for £4.99 each reduced, was going to treat myself 2 winter tires but may have to go to Canada to see the son as he won't be home for Xmas ( forces) so can't justify winters this year ;)

Thule K-Summit looks great :) Sweden quiality

Red bit below??

The Skoda approved was last year were Autosock, this is off their website

Q3: What sort of conditions can I use them in?

A3: They'll improve traction on any snow or ice - even in soft, deep snow, or in wet snow. It's recommended that you take them off when you get back to tarmac, although the reality is that they probably will be driven on tarmac during those intermittent tarmac / snow / tarmac / snow conditions experienced before leaving the snow for good. (The TÜV test included 50 kilometres at 50 kph on dry tarmac. AutoSock passed this "Misuse test", but of course tarmac driving is not recommended as it increases fabric wear very considerably.)

This year however the vag approved ones are called Snocks which are available from your dealer.

I'd take them off if it's intermittent snow Tarmac you'll destroy them slush or snow they seem to be good however winter tires are the best option but I can't justify winters on all four corners

We are a skoda dealer in shrewsbury and we sell snow socks also, we use a premium brand of snow sock made by Autosock which lasts over 2years on both road and thick snow :)

May be furrows of Shrewsbury

According to Skoda the Furrow's place in Shrewsbury isn't a dealer now, but their place in Oswestry is.

Apparently on furrows own website for Shrewsbury it's a dealer for used and new skodas ?

According to Skoda they don't have a place in Shrewsbury, as I had to take my Yeti to Oswestry following a warranty query with Skoda.

well vauxhall thinks winter sox are better than winter tires???

Vauxhall has introduced an affordable alternative to winter tyres – snow socks for your car.

While it may sound like an idea more suited to April Fool’s Day, Vauxhall claims the tyre covers will offer more grip in ice and snow than a winter tyre.

The tyre covers, priced from £50 and able to fit all types of Vauxhall car, will even last several years, says Sophie Thomas, Vauxhall Accessories Manager.

“With so many of us caught out by the big freeze last year, it is important to be better prepared for whatever this winter will throw at us," she said. “If we need to make it home from work, get to the train station or pick the kids up from school after a sudden change to icy conditions, Snow Socks are a perfect solution."

The textured fabric of the snow socks sticks to dry snow and ice, creating friction and allowing the car to grip the road in poor conditions.

Vauxhall says the snow socks could reduce the £395 million paid out to motorists each year for accidental damage caused by slippery roads.

Marketed as ‘less cumbersome than snow chains and more effective than winter tyres on ice and snow’, the covers are designed to slip over the wheel whenever there is wintry weather.

The snow socks are also approved by TUV, the global safety standards
