I think it's sheer GREED sadly.emoticon-0106-crying.gif

Fuel duty imposed by the government.

I can remember when diesel cars were not very popular and the duty on diesel was a very small percentage.

A diesel has become more desirable, so the duty has been increased.

I believe the extra price per litre for diesel is because you tend to get more miles to the litre from a diesel as you do from a petrol vehicle.

Just the government trying to balance its duty levels?

yebbut, deisel is nothing more than a by-product of petrol production, so should be much cheaper in the first place.

Greed from governments AND oil companies IMO.

Difference here in Blandford Dorset is still just over 4P a litre.

Nope, the fuel duty on a litre of diesel is exactly the same as the fuel duty on a litre of petrol.

From 23 March 2011 the UK duty rate for the road fuels unleaded petrol, diesel, biodiesel and bioethanol is GB£0.5795 per litre (£2.63 per imperial gallon or £2.19 per U.S. gallon).[6]

In fairness the level of fuel duty on diesel did used to be lower than petrol until the early 90's. It has never been significantly higher on diesel than on petrol though.

Supply & demand I'm afraid. Global diesel car sales have risen dramatically in recent years, thus the demand for diesel has risen proportionately. Drives the price up. That and greedy taxation!

Glad I switched back to the green stuff now (well super green)

Exactly. Which is why I wrote this:

A few reasons. It is winter and this part of the cracked crude oil goes in to heating oil. Libya is due to come back on line and that is light sweet crude mainly used for low sulphur petrol and diesel has to be brought in from outside Europe where as petrol is mainly pumped out of European or near European wells like Libya.

The gap may well grow to beyond 10p and even as much as 15p a litre like it did in 2008/9.

Its just the same as paying for a tax disk for your car.

It used to be known as 'road tax' but some greedy arsehole politician changed it to 'vehicle excise duty' meaning they don't have to spent ANY money gained through it on repairing the roads. emoticon-0120-doh.gif

But the government goes and spends that money on the people. The gov are no more greedy than the people.
