'Standard' options - how can they affect insurance?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Am thinking about buying a Fabia vRS with the following options:

- cruise control

- 6 cd changer

- side airbags

- ESP

- xenon's

- heated seats

Anyone know if any of these are likely to be classed as "modifications" by insurance companies and increase quotes?

thanks,

p

I'm in the same boat. I had only ESP as an optional extra and when I looked at the list of modifications on the online quote I couldn't find it, so I just left it.

I don't think factory fit options are usually classed as modifications by most insurance companies.

Rob.

Well there was someone on here who declared cruise control and was charged a hefty extra.

I can accept that they should make a small difference to the premium as the car would be a bit more expensive to replace in the event of the claim , but as usual plenty of insurers will take the p and rip you off.

You'd have to check with your own insurer for a definitive answer

I will recheck but on mine it is based on the value I declared the car to be at when I purchased it. Good point though, I will raise it with my broker and see what he says.

Good Question . . . I have always assumed that any 'factory' fitted option would not increase your insurance . . . and I reckon I'm right (that's confidence for you!) . . . . 'retailer' supplied options probably would though.

I have Cruise, ESP, Xenons and Parking Sensors...I declared them to Direct Line, and they made no difference whatsoever...however, your insurance co. may be different...always best to ask :)

Cheers

It is a grey area. Most insurance companies tell you to declare that the car is of 'manufacturers standard specification'. Many don't seem to make allowances for optional extra's. In your case I would just accept the premium you've been quoted. Addmitedly those options would increase the value of the car to replace but they are generally interested in more performance or cosmetic related items and not so much factory fit options.

My scooby had a list of dealer fit options which I always had to declare - that cost me a fortune!!

thanks for all the replies folks, very helpful!

Like you all say, it is probably best to just declare everything and see what they say. I expect that they will hike the premium up a bit purely on the basis that the overall value of the car for replacement purposes - but thats just robbing ins. companies for you!

it seems like a cracking motor for the money though and think that I will be going to see my dealer soon - I expect a fairly hefty quote anyway because although I am 26 I have only had my license for 18months and only 18months no-claims - my 53' reg 1.4 fiesta currently costs me ~

Somethig for you to consider is elephants 10 month bonus accelerator policy. You get 1yrs No Claims after 10 months.

SWMBO uses them and it doesn't seem to cost anymore - ie if you get a 12month quote and divide by 12 then multiply by 10 it's around the same.

The Prodrive Performance Pack? ;) I also believe you could get parts of the pack separately, as well as other Prodrive accessories too, like electrically adjustable Prodrive seats and various other tasty cosmetic mods. Mine came with the Prodrive quick-shift fitted but the insurance company didn't car about that. :D

I declared all my extras to Direct Line when I recently changed my Car to the current Octy, received a new Insurance Certificate detailing extras but my renewal notice doesn't include them.

The only things they ask about (insurance companies) in general is performance enhancing accessories, but defining that is debatable obviously engine mods, different tyres and wheels are sometimes classed. The other is none standard sound systems as it would make your car more attractive to thieves.

Anyway I'm pleased just about to can my Direct Line renewal notice and cancel the policy, to buy my insurance through Direct Line on line (yes same company) but it is over

on my focus i had leather and parking sensors factory options, didnt decalre them to insurance and when i claimed for the car told them about the options and they didnt say anything, other than give a better payout

oh :D cool! lol

I liked the way they gave a finale valuation of the car,

I declared cruise control, 6cd changer ... and leather seats - no difference to insurance premium. I gave the value as

Had a bit of a row with the insurers a little while back over a badge I had on the back of my former Toledo. It was just a red 'R' that I had on the back. Got them to replace it tho!
