engine wirling loom

Featured Replies

As above .... my octavia 4x4 1.9td estate needs the wiring loom removed to allow a full check for breaks in the wires. I have been told the reason for this is water ingress ..... so possable corroded wires.

The guy cannot give me a guide in regard to time it will take and so I am reluctant to allow him do this job as we dont know what it will cost. He has already done the ECU and a relay costing £620, so does anyone know approximate time for this job please.

Regards

Mine is currently at the dealers waiting for the loom to be made. No idea when the car will be returned or how much it will cost.

Why was the ECU and relay (assume it was the ECU power relay) replaced? Did it fix a problem? If not, then tell him to put the old ECU back in.

What is the problem you have now?

It maybe a better option to replace the loom rather than test every wire if there is corrosion. How exactly is he going to test for corroded wires?

Testing every wire shouldn't be necessary to solve your problem. If the guy can't narrow it down to a small group of wires, then he doesn't really know what he's doing.

A new wiring loom is about £185, better than a repair in my opinion.

The car fan came on a few times when car hadnt been used nor on a hot day, engine stopped twice and reluctantly started then went altogther ( sept 30th). The ESP light also came on then various other warning lights ..... I was told it eventually caused a power surge which damaged the ECU .... I believe this problem is something to do with water ingress. Have been told this problem was mentioned on a Skoda bullitin in 2009 .......

When he checked the wiring after the ECU was repaired he found the relay was full off water and shorting out so that also was replaced.

I paid but only did 30 miles then it went again. Back to the garage for another three weeks, a similar repair and checks made, then took it away and it went again after 8 miles. ( 16th Nov).

Now he's saying its the loom and as I cannnot afford the £2k to have it replaced, I now want it removed and repaired if its cost effective. Thats why I want to know about how long the job will take him.

I have been told the new loom for my 06 car is now £2000 plus vat and fitting. For the earlier 04 05 it was £600). and another at £150ish Thats why I want it repairing .....

Thanks for looking and I hope someone can give me an idea on the time removal will take.

Hi,

The wiring looms are on the car are all separate, the engine one which connects to the ecu is between £165 and £185 for a 2006 4*4.

Fitting should take no more than a couple of hours.

A full diagnostic scan would provide more reliable information than throwing parts at it

Thanks for your advice Tony ..... I will contact the garage and let him know what you have said in regard to the loom.

He did say it is one that passes throughout the car and something about a junction somewhere in the loom. Thats one thing he is trying to find, but thinks he now needs to remove it completly. Repair it and then seal it, as the one currently fitted is letting water enter and so corroding the wires.

He has run a full scan more than once and is a well known guy and works on top quality cars, although I am surprised my car has been with him since September the 30th. Returned twice to me as sorted, after being paid in full for the work, and yet it is still in his garage and will not start.

I was going to take my car away but do feel he should sort it as he has been paid. When I said I may remove it to a local Skoda dealership, he gave me another bill for another hour and halfs work plus vat ect for checking the part of the loom accessable in the engine compartment. Any further work will also need to be paid for.

He now wants to change/repair the loom. He has contacted Skoda who gave him the price for the loom, but cannot give him any idea of an exact time for the removal thereof. They did give it a time rating of 0-0 .. meaning "as long as the job takes". So I am left in a hole which is getting harder to climb out of.

Why was the ECU and relay replaced? Did it fix a problem? If not, then tell him to put the old ECU back in.

+1, refund required.
