gearbox's

Featured Replies

does anybody know if you can fit a mk1 vrs gearbox onto a mk1 tdi and would it make it any faster? if it is possible what changes would i need to make?

Is this for real....?!

Stick a Ferrari badge on it.... It'll really shift then!!

Re: Your question = yes it will fit with work. But it won't make it 'faster'....

Mk1 VRS tdi??? Skoda didn't make one!

Anyway if you want to make it faster get it remapped.

I thought the 5 speed in the tdi is the same as the vrs?

Diesel boxes are higher ratio than petrol to off set the lower rpm of the tdi's.

you will end up topping out at a low speed.

You will acvelerate vwry quick tho. you may also find the torque of a remapped tdi will chew the vRS gearbox

it already is remapped running 147bhp but once i get to 110mph it very slow upto 135 where it tops out. dont the vrs top out somewhere around the 150mph mark?which surely is down to the gearing in the box?could do with a box that slows the acceleration down as traction control always kicking in and give me a better top end speed. any suggestions

your right they dont make a mk1 vrs tdi but mine has all the vrs trim on it

What are you doing at 110 MPH

ONE thing also is your rpm. yup the vrs goes faster but it has 2.5-3k rpm more.

If you are hitting 135mph with your 5 speed diesel box @ 4500/5000rpm. Wanting to fit a vRS petrol 5 speed will be slower top end as said before...

Why not fit a diesel 6 speed box from the 130PD L&K model?...and better tyres if your T/C is having to cut in like that!

Lol at this thread !!!!

by your logic, sell your octy and buy an old shagged 1 litre hatchback and fit the VRS gearbox to it - gotta be worth 160 g's at least!

Oh you are a harsh lot today :D

as to the OP:

Yes the box can be made to fit but the short answer is you would not want to as the VRS box ratios will make your car slower. The only time it is worth swapping a diesel and petrol gearbox is the other way, I.E. putting a diesel box into a petrol which will achieve a higher top speed (but the petrol would need to be in a serious state of tune for it to be worthwhile - See Steevie Wonders Sig for details)

Sounds like you'd be better off buying a petrol if you want smoother low gear acceleration and a higher top speed, the amount of torque in a remapped diesel is always going to be a problem in low gears. Might be worth having a look at what the mk1 Fab VRS boys do to manage it although their cars come with the 6 speed box so that might be a start.

dare anyone say it - you need to be pushing a lot more than 150hp to hit 150mph (or is it not that obvious)

your 1.9 TDi isn't powerful enough to hit 150 no matter what gearbox is in it

Billy already gave you ALL the relevant info in the post ABOVE this one.

Think about the maximum revolutions per minute of the vRS engine (approx 6500) compared to that of the diesel. This is measured at the crankshaft and is DIRECTLY connected to the gearbox.

As Billy said, it would accelerate VERY quickly, and top out VERY early. I doubt you'd get above 110mph ever again (he says without bothering to look at the gearing ratio's and getting his calculator out :| Could be wrong...)

buying a petrol all good and well to achieve high speeds but i cant bring myself to fueling it up every two minutes hence why i drive the good old dirty diesel

dont suppose you know the box codes for the 6speed pd's do you?. always have good if not new 225/40/18's fitted, might try not having my foot enbedded in the floor all the time that would cure the t/c problem

Such a sensible quote that....

That sort of driving style is not what most of us on here promote....

Time and place for giving it a bootful.
