MPi engine power rating?

Featured Replies

i was under the impression all the mpi engines were 68bhp, and the earlier spi engines were 54bhp but i have a '98 felicia with the mpi engine yet the info sticker in the boot and the service book states i have the '40 kw' engine (54bhp) it does feel very nippy and doesn't feel far off the pace of my golf mk2 gti 8v!

Yeah, 68 for the 1.3mpi, 0-60 was around 12 seconds i believe?

well thats what i believed mine was, until the sticker in the boot said otherwise!

There were definitely 40 and 50kW MPi engines, based on their compression. Check the engine number, if it's got 135 in it then it's a low compression (40kW) one, if it's 136 then it's HC (50kW).

ok, cheers, thats cleared that up then!

Yep. All correct.

The SPi's were also available in the 135 (low compression) and 136 (high compression) engines.

The torque is very similar though. 93 lb/ft vs 100 lb/ft. And the 135 engine gets it's torque lower down (slightly) so it will still feel pretty nippy but if you had next to a 136 engined felicia it would definitely pull away from you!
