Strange Noise

Featured Replies

We have a Fabia 1.9sdi, when the car goes above 30mph it makes a noise; not sure how to explain, but it sounds like an aeroplane taking off, I would describe it as a droning noise. The noise then continues until the car stops.

I know that is not much information to go off, but any ideas would be appreciated

Is the undertray hanging down by any chance? I also see people driving about the the tray flapping about like mad. Worth a look

That came off a long time ago !! But thanks for the suggestion, wondering if it could be wheel bearings?

That's what I would have gone for first as it's road speed related not engine speed.

Is it bad around 20mph? Do you have 'cheap' tyres? I had a droning noise which sometimes sounded like a worbling sound which turned out to be stepped rear tyres, basically cheap branded tyres which had lost their shape and had squared themselves. Sounded just like wheel bearings but it wasnt.

The noise doesn't kick in until about 30 mph, as for the tyres, I hope it isn't as they are expensive alloys

If we were to change the wheel bearings, to rule them out, are we going to have to change both sides to locate the problem, or is there another way to tell????

Yes, female and clueless !!

If you just want to check your wheel bearings for wear without removing the wheels, do the following:
  • Jack up your vehicle.
    Support it on jack stands.
  • Without getting under the vehicle, grasp each wheel at the top and bottom and attempt to rock it.
There should be minimal movement. Excessive play may indicate that the wheel bearing is worn and needs adjustment or replacement.
  • Put the gearshift in Neutral if you have an automatic transmission, or take your manualtransmission out of gear.
  • Rotate the wheel.
Listen for any unusual noise and feel for any roughness as it rotates, which may indicate that the bearing is damaged and needs to be replaced.

Thank you

I think that you will find that modern wheel bearing packs are crafty buggars, so I'd doubt if you will find out any thing about their condition that would convince you that they were faulty. I think that you need to seek professional intervention, and if one if faulty, and if funds allow get both sides replaced.

does it stop/get worst if you turn? if you put you foot on the clutch and let it idle does the noise continue?
