Do speaker level amps work?

Featured Replies

Looking to upgrade sound quality so have replaced front door speakers with old-ish Infinity 6500 components. Sound level is now reduced and head unit clips when a decent volume is reached, consequently need a higher power amp which has to be speaker level. Have never used one so do they do the job? I also want to drive a 12" Shadow Works Saturn sub so need an amp to bridge with built in crossover control. I want a simple one box solution and at least 200w for the sub and 50w for the fronts, what amps do you recommend? New or used OK.

Why speaker level, with a bit of VCDS coding the Columbus can provide line-outs as it indeed it does when the OEM sound system is fitted.

Interesting, thanks for pointing me in another direction as I would prefer to use RCA / phono method. A "few" questions; is this a quick and easy thing to do, will someone with the right equipment be able to sort assuming they have some experience of other coding changes or is this a more specialist job, is there an internet resource that describes where to look and what to change, do you know how the Columbus rear connections are configured once you have made this change, do I run RCA cable into Columbus with phono connection. Sorry there are more questions but this may not be the correct forum.

Alternatively does anyone know of an ICE installer in West Kent, north east Sussex who can carry out the coding and instal?

Thanks

Is this article any use? If so, my VCDS awaits you! :)

Ray, thanks for this - I can see from some of your other posts that you must be a VCDS expert and could also update the sta nav at the same time - looks like a jod for the holidays. Can I check what version the Columbus is running without a VCDS connection?

That depends on whether your "secret" menu is available. To check, press and hold the "Setup" button for some considerable time. It will cycle to another setup screen, then the engineers' menu, which should contain your version info. If it's not available, a tweak with VCDS will enable it.

It appears to be very complicated and potentially risky - how far have you gone into this? Tried the setup button for 2 mins with no success only goes into FM, AM and DAB radio so needs a prod.

It's only software tweaks and - like most other computer operations - save the current configuration prior to tweaking so that you can restore it if needed.

You need to decide what you want to tweak, then find the required coding. Once the coding is obtained, connect up, enter it, job done.

There are many places to obtain coding, including on this forum (mainly in the VCDS section, of course). :)

I have been scanning that section which is what has scared me - number of slip ups to successes regardless of saving current settings before fiddling. I will research and PM / phone for a meet.
